The Not-So-Exclusive Club
Airport lounge access has become a competitive battleground for banks in India. To attract new customers, many now offer complimentary lounge visits as a key feature on a wide range of credit cards, including those designed for beginners or moderate spenders.
The perk is no longer just for the elite. For a nominal annual fee, or sometimes even for free, you can trade the noisy departure gate for a quiet space with comfortable seating, free Wi-Fi, and complimentary food and drinks. It’s a simple strategy: banks offer a taste of luxury to build loyalty, and for savvy travellers, it’s an opportunity to significantly upgrade their travel experience without a hefty price tag.
How 'Free' Access Actually Works
Complimentary lounge access isn’t a complete free-for-all; it comes with rules. Most entry-level cards offer a set number of free visits per quarter, typically for domestic travel. For instance, a card might provide two free domestic lounge visits every three months. This access is usually managed through networks like Visa, Mastercard, or RuPay in India. For international travel, lounge access is often provided through separate programs like Priority Pass or Dreamfolks, though this is more common with mid-tier and premium cards. To gain entry, you simply present your eligible credit card and boarding pass at the lounge reception. A small transaction fee (e.g., ₹2 or ₹25) is charged to your card to validate it, and then you’re in.
Watch Out for the Spending Clause
A growing trend among card issuers is tying lounge access to spending criteria. This is the most important condition to be aware of. Many cards now require you to spend a certain amount, such as ₹5,000 to ₹35,000, in the previous month or quarter to unlock your complimentary lounge visit. For example, the IDFC FIRST Select Credit Card requires a minimum monthly spend of ₹20,000 to enable lounge access for the next quarter. This strategy ensures that the perk is reserved for active cardholders. Before applying for a card, always check if lounge access is guaranteed or if it depends on your spending habits. Some cards, though fewer now, still offer access without minimum spend requirements, making them excellent value if you can find them.
Key Features on Entry-Level Cards
When comparing entry-level cards for lounge access, focus on a few key details. First, check the number of complimentary visits offered annually and the quarterly cap; for instance, eight visits a year capped at two per quarter is a common offering. Second, look at the annual fee and whether it can be waived by meeting a certain spending threshold. Cards like the PNB RuPay Platinum have a low fee that is waived after just one transaction per quarter, effectively making it free for regular users. Also, confirm which lounge network the card uses and check its coverage at airports you frequent. While some cards like the Federal Bank Scapia offer unlimited domestic access (contingent on spending ₹20,000 monthly), they are geared towards more active spenders.
Know the Fine Print
The devil is always in the details. Remember that “complimentary” access is almost always for the primary cardholder only. Bringing a guest will usually incur a fee, payable directly at the lounge. Also, the number of visits is often limited per quarter, and unused visits typically do not carry over. Before a trip, it's wise to check the updated list of participating lounges on your bank's or the network's website, as these can change. Finally, be aware that while basic snacks and drinks are free, premium food, alcoholic beverages, or services like spa treatments will likely come at an extra cost.
