Boston Consulting Group (BCG) has put a number on the artificial intelligence revolution: a potential $200 billion net new market for tech services by 2030. This figure signals a massive shift in how businesses will operate and what they demand.
Deconstructing the $200 Billion Figure
The eye-catching
number from BCG's recent report, titled 'The Talent Is Already on Your Payroll. The Clock Isn't', represents a net opportunity. The consulting firm projects that while AI-led services will generate a staggering $300 billion to $400 billion in new growth for the global tech services market by 2030, AI-driven efficiencies will also displace or make redundant about $200 billion of existing, traditional services. This leaves a net positive impact of $100 billion to $200 billion. The report forecasts the overall global services market will expand from around $1.7 trillion in 2025 to as much as $2.4 trillion by 2030, with AI being a primary catalyst for this expansion. The forecast is based on an extensive analysis of job postings, professional profiles, and surveys with enterprise executives, highlighting a clear and accelerating demand for advanced AI integration.
What Are 'AI-Led Tech Services'?
Beyond the buzzwords, AI-led services refer to a new class of technology work focused on implementing, managing, and scaling sophisticated AI systems. This is not just about using AI tools to do old tasks faster; it's about fundamentally redesigning business processes. Key areas include 'Applied AI', which involves building and deploying custom AI solutions that can handle complex, multi-step tasks autonomously—often called agentic AI. Examples range from automating entire customer service workflows and IT incident management to generating predictive analytics for business strategy and optimising supply chains. It also includes the crucial human oversight, governance, and ethical frameworks that clients will require to manage these powerful new systems. Essentially, businesses will increasingly pay for outcomes delivered by AI, not just the hours people work.
The Talent Paradox: A Shortage of Skills, Not People
A critical insight from the BCG report is that the main bottleneck for tech services firms isn't a lack of people, but a mismatch in skills. The report argues that companies have a 'talent decision to make', not a talent shortage to solve. Most of the people needed to deliver these new AI services are already on the payroll. The challenge lies in reskilling and redeploying them effectively. Currently, at traditional tech services firms, only 10-15% of AI-tagged professionals are in 'Applied AI' roles—the ones who build and run new solutions. In contrast, at AI-native companies, this figure is 90-95%. The majority at traditional firms are using AI to enhance existing work, not create new value streams. To capture the $200 billion opportunity, firms must pivot from a model that prioritizes a large base of junior staff to one that cultivates senior, client-facing engineers who can lead complex AI deployments.
Implications for India's Tech Industry
For India's world-leading IT services sector, this shift presents both a massive opportunity and a significant threat. Indian firms, which account for a substantial portion of the global services market, are built on a pyramid structure that has historically leveraged a large, cost-effective talent pool. The move towards AI-led services, which demand more senior, specialised 'Applied AI' talent, challenges this model. The contraction of $200 billion in traditional services could disproportionately affect work currently done in India. However, the $100-$200 billion net new market is also up for grabs. Success will depend on how quickly and effectively these giants can upskill their vast workforces. BCG has identified 40 distinct Applied AI roles that can be developed from existing positions, such as a data scientist evolving into a 'forward_deployed engineer' who works directly with clients to deliver outcomes. The race is on to transform millions of employees into the AI specialists the market will demand.
