The Race to God's Own Country
Every year, as August approaches, a familiar wave of excitement and anxiety sweeps over the Malayali diaspora. The pull of home for Onam, Kerala's most significant festival, is immense. It's a time for family reunions, elaborate feasts, and cultural festivities.
However, for the lakhs of young people studying or working in cities like Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Delhi, this excitement is often tempered by the daunting task of securing a ticket home. Regular train services get booked out months in advance, and flight prices soar, leaving many in a lurch. This is where the annual announcement of Onam special trains by Indian Railways becomes a beacon of hope, providing a crucial lifeline for those yearning to celebrate with their loved ones. This year, the main day of Onam falls on August 26.
Railways Announces Over 100 Special Services
In a major relief for travellers, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced that more than 100 special trains will be operated to handle the festive rush for Onam 2026. This move is a direct response to the massive demand from passengers seeking to travel to Kerala during the festival period. While the full schedule and routes for all 100+ trains are being released in phases, the initial announcements from Southern Railway have already brought cheer, particularly for those in neighbouring states. These special services are designed to connect major hubs with various destinations across Kerala, easing congestion on regular services and offering a better chance at securing a confirmed ticket.
First Wave: Chennai and Mangaluru Routes
Southern Railway has kickstarted the announcements with several key services from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. One of the first is a weekly special between Mangaluru Central and Chennai Egmore (Train Nos. 06126/06125). The train from Mangaluru will run every Monday from July 13 to August 31, while the return service from Chennai will operate every Tuesday from July 14 to September 1. This service will pass through key Keralan towns like Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Tirur, and Palakkad. Additionally, special trains connecting Chennai to Kollam have also been announced. Another pair of weekly specials will link Thiruvananthapuram Central with Tambaram. Bookings for many of these initial services have already commenced.
Your Booking Game Plan: Tips for Success
Securing a ticket on these high-demand trains requires speed and strategy. First, keep a close eye on the official IRCTC website and the social media handles of zonal railways like Southern Railway (@GMSRailway) for the latest announcements. Bookings for special trains often open at very short notice, so being prepared is key. Create a master list of passengers with names, ages, and ID proof details in your IRCTC account beforehand to save precious time during booking. Use the official IRCTC Rail Connect app on your phone, which is often faster than the website. Be ready exactly at the opening time, as tickets for popular routes can vanish within minutes. If you miss out initially, don't lose hope. Keep checking for availability, as additional coaches or services might be added later.
Beyond Trains: Your Backup Options
Even with over 100 special services, not everyone will get a confirmed train ticket. It's smart to have a Plan B. Look into special bus services operated by state transport corporations like KSRTC, which often ramp up their schedules during the Onam season. Carpooling with friends or colleagues is another viable option that can be both economical and fun. For those who can be flexible with their travel dates, travelling a few days before the peak rush or returning later can significantly increase your chances of finding a ticket. Also, consider booking tickets to a nearby, less-congested station and completing the last leg of your journey by bus or a connecting local train. The goal is to get home, and a little creative planning can make all the difference.
