Why Your Domestic Health Policy Is Not Enough
A common assumption is that your existing health insurance will cover you anywhere in the world. Unfortunately, this is rarely the case. Most Indian health policies offer limited or no coverage outside the country. Even if they do, they may not cover critical
services like medical evacuation, which can be astronomically expensive. Moreover, healthcare costs in countries like the US, Canada, and Japan are significantly higher than in India. A minor procedure or a few nights in a hospital could cost more than your entire trip budget, running into lakhs of rupees. This makes dedicated travel insurance a non-negotiable part of your trip planning.
Hack 1: Compare Policies Online, Not Just on Price
The easiest mistake to make is simply buying the cheapest plan you can find. While affordability is key, the real value of insurance is in its coverage. Use online comparison platforms to see quotes from different insurers side-by-side. However, look beyond the premium. Pay close attention to the sum insured for medical emergencies—aim for at least ₹40-80 lakh, with the higher end for destinations like the US and Europe. Check the sub-limits for things like hospital room rent and the list of exclusions to understand what is not covered. A slightly more expensive plan with higher limits and fewer exclusions often provides far better value.
Hack 2: Choose Annual Multi-Trip Insurance if You Travel Often
If you are a frequent flyer, taking three or more international trips a year, buying a separate policy for each journey is inefficient and costly. An annual multi-trip policy is a smart hack that can save you significant money and time. This type of plan covers all your international trips within a one-year period, usually up to a certain duration per trip (e.g., 30 or 45 days). You pay a single premium for year-round peace of mind, eliminating the need to shop for a new policy every time you book a flight. For occasional travellers, a single-trip plan remains the more budget-friendly option.
Hack 3: Understand Deductibles and Co-payments
Many budget policies come with a 'deductible' or 'excess'. This is the initial amount you must pay out of your own pocket before the insurance company starts covering the costs. For example, if your policy has a ₹10,000 deductible and you have a claim of ₹50,000, you pay the first ₹10,000, and the insurer pays the remaining ₹40,000. While a higher deductible often means a lower premium, it can be a trap if you're not prepared for the upfront cost. Some policies offer a 'zero deductible' option, which can be a smarter choice for medical coverage, ensuring the insurer covers eligible costs from the very beginning.
Hack 4: Declare Your Adventure Plans
Young travellers often seek more than just city tours. If your itinerary includes activities like skiing, scuba diving, trekking, or even renting a moped, check if they are covered. Standard travel insurance policies often exclude 'adventure sports' or hazardous activities. An injury sustained during such an activity may not be covered, leaving you with the full bill. Most insurers offer an adventure sports add-on for an additional premium. It's a small price to pay for ensuring your adventurous spirit doesn't lead to financial ruin.
Hack 5: Buy Your Policy Early
One of the most common mistakes is buying travel insurance at the last minute. To get the most out of your policy, purchase it as soon as you've made your first non-refundable trip payment, like booking flights or accommodation. Buying early doesn't cost more, but it activates crucial benefits like trip cancellation coverage immediately. If you have to cancel your trip due to a covered reason like a sudden illness or family emergency, you can be reimbursed for your pre-paid costs. Waiting until the day before you fly means you lose out on this valuable protection.
