The New Family Member
The definition of family is officially expanding to include furry, feathered, and scaled members. Across India, a cultural shift known as "pet humanisation" is taking hold. Pets are no longer just animals we own; they are integral parts of our households,
treated with the same affection and consideration as any other family member. This change is driving a boom in the Indian pet care market, which was valued at over USD 3.6 billion in 2024 and is projected to grow significantly. This rising status means that when it comes to life's big decisions—including holidays—the pet's needs and comfort are no longer an afterthought, but a primary consideration.
Paws on the Pavement, Not on a Plane
So, how are these furry bosses shaping travel? The data points overwhelmingly towards the road. A staggering 93% of Indian pet owners prefer flexible, spontaneous road trips over other forms of transport. This preference for ground travel makes sense; it allows for more control, comfort, and flexibility for pets who might find air travel stressful. While some airlines like Air India and Akasa Air are increasingly catering to pet travel, with both reporting significant growth in pet bookings, the complexities and costs mean most families opt to drive. This trend is steering travellers towards domestic, driveable destinations, influencing not just how people travel, but where they go.
Rethinking the Itinerary
Once at the destination, the pet's influence continues. Travellers are actively seeking out experiences they can share with their companions. According to recent research, 64% of pet-owning travellers have visited dog-friendly beaches or dined at pet-welcoming restaurants and cafés. Another 59% have made a point to explore pet-friendly towns and city centres. This has forced a rethink in the hospitality and tourism sectors. It’s no longer enough to simply allow pets on the premises. Destinations are now creating entire pet-inclusive ecosystems, with amenities and activities designed to make the whole family—furry members included—feel welcome.
The Hospitality Industry Unleashed
The travel industry has been quick to respond to this lucrative and growing market. Online booking platforms have seen searches for "pet-friendly" accommodation become one of the top filters used by travellers globally and in India. In response, MakeMyTrip reported a 43% jump in bookings for pet-friendly properties in early 2025, and nearly a third of properties listed on Booking.com in India now welcome pets. Hotels and resorts are rolling out the red carpet, offering everything from special pet beds and bowls to gourmet pet menus and dedicated play areas. Chains like Vivanta by Taj and resorts like Tree of Life in Jaipur offer specialised 'Pawsome Holidays' packages, ensuring that pets are pampered just as much as their human companions.
More Than Just a Trend
While the logistics can still be challenging—from finding truly welcoming spaces to navigating extra fees—the momentum is undeniable. The rise of pet-inclusive travel is more than just a passing fad; it reflects a deeper societal shift. Driven by increasing urbanisation, the growth of nuclear families, and a greater appreciation for the emotional support pets provide, this trend is about connection. It speaks to a desire for shared experiences and the belief that a family holiday isn't complete unless the whole family is there. The message from Indian travellers is clear: a vacation is better when you can bring your best friend along.
