A Major Boost for Festive Travellers
The Railway Board has approved the introduction of the Surat-Udaipur City Vande Bharat Express, a move strategically timed ahead of the bustling festival season, which includes Navratri and Diwali. This new service is expected to be a significant boon
for residents of Central and South Gujarat who travel to Rajasthan for holidays, business, and family gatherings. The train provides a much-needed faster and more comfortable alternative to road travel, which can take eight to nine hours. By significantly reducing travel time, the service aims to ease the typical transport congestion experienced during this peak period, offering a more convenient option for thousands of passengers.
Route, Schedule, and Timings
The new service, designated with train numbers 26903/26904, will connect the two cities in approximately 7 hours and 30 minutes. The train will operate six days a week, with no service on Tuesdays to allow for maintenance. According to the approved schedule, train number 26903 will depart from Surat at 6:10 AM and arrive at Udaipur City at 1:40 PM. On its return journey, train number 26904 will leave Udaipur City at 3:35 PM and reach Surat at 11:00 PM. Key commercial stoppages along the route include Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Maninagar, Asarva, Himmatnagar, Shamlaji Road, Dungarpur, and Zawar, enhancing connectivity across multiple towns in Gujarat and southern Rajasthan.
An Enhanced Travel Experience
As with all Vande Bharat services, passengers on the Surat-Udaipur route can expect a significant upgrade in travel comfort and amenities. The eight-coach trainset is fully air-conditioned and features ergonomically designed seats with spacious legroom. The service is divided into two classes: AC Chair Car (CC) and Executive Chair Car (EC), with the latter offering wider, rotating seats. Onboard features include Wi-Fi, an infotainment system, reading lights, and automatic doors. The train is also equipped with modern safety systems like the KAVACH anti-collision technology and CCTV cameras. Onboard catering services will provide meals, snacks, and beverages, typically included in the ticket fare.
Operational Changes and What to Expect
The launch of this new service comes with a significant operational change. The existing Udaipur City-Asarva Vande Bharat Express (train numbers 26963/26964), which began operations in February 2026, will be discontinued. The new train essentially extends that route all the way to Surat, providing a direct link for the diamond city. This makes the Surat-Udaipur train the first Vande Bharat to originate and terminate in Surat, which will also serve as the primary maintenance base. While an exact launch date has not been officially announced, railway officials have indicated the service is expected to begin within a few days, aligning with the goal of serving pre-Navratri travelers.
Boosting Tourism and Regional Trade
Beyond the immediate convenience for festival travelers, the new Vande Bharat Express is poised to deliver a substantial boost to regional economies. The improved connectivity is expected to stimulate tourism in Udaipur, famously known as the "City of Lakes," by making it more accessible to people from Gujarat's industrial hubs. Simultaneously, it will facilitate easier and faster travel for business communities in Surat, the nation's diamond and textile centre, who have dealings in Rajasthan. This direct, high-speed link is anticipated to strengthen trade and social ties between the two culturally and commercially important regions.
