The Good News on Global Fee Hikes
You may have heard news about Japan implementing its first major visa fee increase in nearly 50 years, effective from July 2026. For many nationalities, the cost of a visa has increased by as much as five times. However, travellers from India can breathe
a sigh of relief. Thanks to a bilateral agreement, Indian passport holders are exempt from this significant global price hike. While the headline news might cause alarm, the reality for Indian applicants is that the visa fee structure remains exceptionally affordable, making Japan a very accessible destination.
The Official Embassy Visa Fee
So, what is the actual fee charged by the Japanese government? For Indian citizens, the official visa fee is just ₹500. What makes this even better is that this price applies to both single-entry and multiple-entry visas. This fixed, low cost simplifies the decision-making process, whether you're planning a once-in-a-lifetime trip or hope to become a frequent visitor. Previously, Japan also had a separate, lower fee for a transit visa, but this category has been discontinued. Those transiting through Japan must now apply for a standard temporary visitor visa.
The Mandatory VFS Service Charge
The embassy fee is only one part of the equation. In India, Japan visa applications are managed by VFS Global, the official partner for the Embassy of Japan. For their services, which include collecting applications and biometrics, VFS levies a mandatory service charge. As of 2026, this service charge is ₹800 per application, inclusive of taxes. This fee is non-negotiable and must be paid by every applicant, even those who might be exempt from the embassy visa fee itself. It covers the administrative and logistical costs of processing your application.
Calculating Your Total Minimum Cost
To budget accurately, you must combine the embassy fee and the VFS service charge. The calculation is straightforward: ₹500 (Visa Fee) + ₹800 (VFS Service Charge) = ₹1,300. This is the minimum mandatory amount you will pay to submit your Japan visa application. Keep in mind that this does not include any optional services. For example, if you want your passport delivered to your home after processing, you can opt for a courier service, which costs approximately ₹550 extra. Always factor these additional costs in if you choose to use them.
A Note on Single vs. Multiple Entry
Since the embassy fee for Indian nationals is the same for both single and multiple-entry visas (₹500), it can be advantageous to apply for a multiple-entry visa if you are eligible. A multiple-entry visa allows you to travel to Japan several times over a period of one to five years without needing to re-apply each time. Eligibility often depends on factors like your travel history (especially previous trips to Japan or G7 countries) and financial standing. If you foresee more trips to Japan in the future, it is worth checking the specific requirements to see if you qualify.
Key Reminders Before You Apply
Before starting your application, remember a few crucial points. First, Japan does not offer a visa-on-arrival facility for Indian passport holders; you must secure your visa before you travel. All applications must be submitted through an authorized VFS Global centre. While the fees are stable, it is always a best practice to verify the most current amounts on the official VFS Global website or the Embassy of Japan in India's website before you go to the application centre, as policies can be updated.
