The Current State of the Monsoon
After a period of active rainfall, the monsoon has entered a quieter phase, particularly over peninsular India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) noted on September 7th that rainfall activity is expected to remain subdued in the region for about
a week. However, this is not a complete withdrawal. This lull, often called a 'break' phase, sees a shift in rainfall patterns rather than a total stop. While southern regions are experiencing drier weather, the monsoon trough—an elongated low-pressure area—remains active over parts of north and central India, sustaining rains there. This uneven distribution is characteristic of the monsoon's later stages, with the country as a whole facing a rainfall deficit of around 14% as of early September.
The Bay of Bengal: The Monsoon's Engine
The Bay of Bengal is a critical engine for the southwest monsoon. Much of the season's rainfall isn't from a steady, uniform flow of moisture but from specific weather events that form over these waters. These are known as low-pressure systems. Think of them as massive, rotating columns of air that draw in moisture from the warm sea. When a low-pressure system forms in the Bay, it acts like a powerful vortex, pulling in moisture-laden winds and concentrating them. These systems are the primary drivers that transport huge volumes of water vapour from the sea onto the Indian subcontinent.
How These Systems Drive Rainfall
Once formed, these low-pressure systems and their more intense cousins, depressions, typically move in a west-northwesterly direction across the Indian landmass. As they travel over states like Odisha, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh, they release torrential rain along their path. They also play a vital role in controlling the monsoon trough. A strong system in the Bay of Bengal helps pull this trough southwards, activating the monsoon over a wider area of central and northern India. When these systems are active and frequent, they ensure widespread and sustained rainfall across the country's heartland.
What Happens When the Engine Stalls?
The current slowdown is a textbook example of what happens when there's a lack of significant weather systems forming in the Bay of Bengal. Without a strong low-pressure system to act as an anchor and driving force, the monsoon's circulation weakens. The moisture-laden winds are not pulled inland as effectively, and the monsoon trough can shift to an unfavourable position, often moving closer to the Himalayan foothills. This leads to increased rain in the northeastern states and along the Himalayas but causes a 'break' or a dry spell over the vast plains and peninsular India. The absence of these systems is a key reason for the prolonged pauses that can mark a monsoon season.
A Glimmer of Hope on the Horizon
The current lull might not last long. Forecasters are already tracking the potential formation of a new cyclonic circulation over the central Bay of Bengal. The IMD predicts that this could develop into a low-pressure area around September 11th. If this system materializes and strengthens as expected, it could significantly revive rainfall activity, particularly over eastern and central India, from September 10th onwards. This demonstrates the direct and immediate influence of the Bay: as a new system brews, the promise of rain returns to parched areas, potentially making up for some of the recent deficit.
