Kedarkantha: The Quintessential Winter Trek
Often called the 'Queen of Winter Treks', Kedarkantha is arguably the most popular choice for a first Himalayan snow adventure. The trek, typically completed in 5-6 days, is considered easy to moderate, making it highly accessible. Starting from the village
of Sankri, the trail winds through dense pine forests, past the frozen Juda Ka Talab lake, and opens up to stunning campsites. The reward for your effort is the summit at 12,500 feet, which offers a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of famous peaks like Swargarohini and Bandarpoonch. Its well-established trail and rewarding views make it a near-perfect entry point into winter trekking.
Dayara Bugyal: Meadows of White
If your idea of heaven is vast, rolling meadows blanketed in pristine snow, then Dayara Bugyal is the trek for you. Considered one of the most beautiful alpine meadows in India, this trek is particularly suited for beginners and families due to its gentle gradients. Over 4-5 days, the trail takes you through charming oak forests before revealing the expansive 'Bugyal'. Reaching an altitude of around 12,000 feet, it provides spectacular views of towering peaks like Bandarpoonch and Black Peak without a strenuous, early-morning summit push. The trek guarantees a serene experience, allowing you to soak in the tranquillity of the snow-covered landscape.
Brahmatal: The Lake of Myths
For those seeking a blend of frozen alpine lakes and stunning ridge walks, Brahmatal is an excellent choice. This 5-6 day trek is rated easy-to-moderate and offers a different flavour of the Himalayas. The trail passes through beautiful rhododendron and oak forests, leading to the frozen lakes of Bekaltal and the mythical Brahmatal itself. A key highlight is the close-up view of the majestic Mt. Trishul and Mt. Nanda Ghunti from the 12,250-foot summit. While suitable for fit beginners, the trek involves some longer walking days and colder conditions, offering a slightly more challenging yet deeply rewarding experience.
Nag Tibba: The Perfect Weekend Escape
Short on time? Nag Tibba, or the 'Serpent's Peak', packs a full Himalayan experience into a weekend. As one of the most accessible winter treks, it's perfect for those looking for a quick escape. The trail starts from Pantwari village, near Mussoorie, and can be completed in just two days. Despite its short duration, this trek climbs to an altitude of 9,915 feet and offers everything from dense forests to snowy trails. The summit provides incredible views of the Garhwal and Dhauladhar ranges, including peaks like Bandarpoonch and Swargarohini, proving that a memorable snow adventure doesn't always require a long journey.
Chopta and Chandrashila: A Summit with Grand Views
Offering some of the most dramatic mountain views for a relatively short trek, the route to Chopta, Tungnath, and Chandrashila is a fantastic option. The trek to Chandrashila Peak, which sits at about 13,000 feet, is more of a steep ascent but is manageable for determined beginners. During winter, the trail from Tungnath—the world's highest Shiva temple—to the Chandrashila summit is completely covered in snow, adding to the adventure. The reward is an unparalleled panoramic view of major Himalayan peaks, including Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Chaukhamba.
