Secure Your Luggage Like a Pro
The most common concern on an overnight journey is luggage safety. While many travellers use them, a simple chain and padlock are just the beginning. Invest in a sturdy, good-quality chain that can be threaded through your luggage handles and secured
to the metal loops found under the lower berths. This prevents easy grab-and-run theft at stations. For your valuables like your wallet, phone, and passport, never leave them in your main luggage. Keep them in a small daypack or crossbody bag that stays on your person at all times, even when you sleep. Many experienced travellers prefer to use this small bag as a pillow or keep it near their head.
The Upper Berth Advantage
When booking your ticket, always try to select the upper berth. This isn't just about avoiding the daytime foot traffic of co-passengers. The upper berth offers a greater degree of privacy and security. It is harder for anyone to access your belongings while you sleep, and you can keep smaller bags beside you without disturbance. This position keeps you out of the direct line of sight and away from the casual movement within the compartment, adding a significant layer of personal safety, especially for solo travellers.
Pack a Smart Hygiene Kit
Sleeper class coaches are about utility, not luxury, and hygiene standards can vary. A well-packed hygiene kit is non-negotiable. Essential items include hand sanitiser, wet wipes, and your own toilet paper. Wet wipes are invaluable for freshening up without needing to access the washrooms frequently. Given that bedding is not provided in sleeper class, many regular travellers recommend carrying your own lightweight blanket or a fresh sheet. A shawl or scarf can also provide warmth and double as a privacy screen. For washroom visits, a pair of slip-on sandals is also a wise addition.
Stay Powered and Connected Safely
While some newer coaches have charging points, they are often limited and highly contested. Relying on them also means leaving your expensive device unattended. The single most important tech accessory for a long train journey is a fully charged power bank. This allows you to keep your phone and other devices charged without having to plug them into a public socket out of your sight. For entertainment, download movies, music, or podcasts to your device before you leave, as network connectivity can be unreliable on many routes.
Food and Water Wisdom
While the aroma of food from station vendors can be tempting, it's safer to be self-reliant, especially late at night. Pack your own light snacks like fruits, nuts, or granola bars. It's also crucial to carry your own reusable water bottle. If you need to buy water, ensure it's from a reputable vendor and that the seal is intact. Avoid buying open or cut food items from vendors who hop on and off the train between major stations. If you do order from the official pantry car, ensure the staff are in uniform.
Comfort is Key for a Good Night's Rest
Getting quality sleep amidst the noise and motion can be a challenge. A few small items can make a world of difference. An eye mask and earplugs are essential for blocking out light and the symphony of snores and chatter. An inflatable neck pillow can prevent stiffness and is easy to pack. Dressing in comfortable, layered clothing is also smart, as temperatures in the coach can fluctuate during the night. A light jacket or shawl will keep you warm if the open windows make it chilly.
