The Visa-Free Advantage
The single biggest barrier for many aspiring international travellers is the visa application process. Phu Quoc masterfully sidesteps this by offering a 30-day visa exemption for Indian passport holders. This policy means you can visit the island without
the paperwork, fees, and waiting times associated with a standard visa. However, there's a crucial condition: you must fly directly to Phu Quoc International Airport from a foreign country and not transit through mainland Vietnam. While this 'visa-free' status is a massive draw, Indian authorities have advised travellers to consider obtaining a standard Vietnam e-visa if there is any chance they might need to travel to the mainland for emergencies, such as medical issues or flight disruptions, to avoid potential immigration complications. For a straightforward island-only holiday, though, the visa exemption remains a game-changer.
Bridging the Distance: Easier Air Connectivity
Getting to Phu Quoc from India is becoming significantly easier. The island's growing popularity has led to an increase in flight options, reducing travel time and complexity. While one-stop flights via hubs like Ho Chi Minh City, Bangkok or Singapore are common, direct connectivity is also on the rise. For instance, Sun PhuQuoc Airways is launching direct flights from Ahmedabad to Phu Quoc starting in December 2026, a journey of just over five hours. Airlines like Vietjet Air and Vietnam Airlines also offer competitive fares and frequent routes from major Indian cities like Delhi and Mumbai. This increase in flight frequency and the introduction of direct routes are direct results of the island's tourism boom, with searches from India for flights to Phu Quoc increasing by 133%. This makes the journey less daunting for those not accustomed to long-haul travel with multiple layovers.
Seamless On-Island Journeys
Once you arrive, getting around Phu Quoc is no longer the challenge it once was. The island is in the midst of a massive infrastructure overhaul, partly in preparation for hosting the APEC Economic Leaders' Week in 2027. A key project is the expansion of the DT975 road, the island's main north-south corridor, into a modern 10-lane thoroughfare. This expansion is designed to ease traffic and connect the airport to major tourism areas efficiently. Furthermore, a new Light Rail Transit (LRT) system is being developed along this corridor, which will connect the airport with the southern part of the island. With construction on these projects being accelerated, visitors will find it easier than ever to explore the island's diverse beaches, markets, and attractions without being solely reliant on taxis or private-hire vehicles. The goal is to create a seamless, multimodal transport network befitting a top-tier international destination.
A Boom in World-Class Accommodation
Phu Quoc's development extends to its hospitality sector, offering a vast and growing range of accommodation for every budget. This addresses a key concern for first-time travellers: finding reliable and comfortable lodging. In recent years, the island has seen an explosion of new resorts from world-renowned brands. Marriott International is developing seven new hotels, including brands like W Hotels, The Westin, and Le Méridien, all set to open around 2027. Park Hyatt is also making its Vietnam debut with a luxury resort opening in December 2026. Beyond the high-end, numerous boutique hotels and cost-effective resorts have also opened their doors, ensuring that whether you are on a honeymoon or a budget-friendly solo trip, you will find a suitable place to stay. This surge in development means competitive pricing and modern amenities are becoming the norm, making Phu Quoc a strong competitor to established destinations like Bali and the Maldives.
