A Quantum Leap in Capacity
The heart of the upgrade is a massive increase in the system's processing power. The new Passenger Reservation System (PRS) is designed to handle over 1.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute. To put that in perspective, the previous system could manage around
32,000 bookings per minute. This is a nearly five-fold increase in capacity, aimed directly at easing the digital congestion that passengers frequently experience. The system is also built to handle a tenfold increase in passenger queries, jumping from 4 lakh to over 40 lakh enquiries per minute, which includes everything from checking seat availability to PNR status.
Why the 40-Year-Old System Needed an Overhaul
The Passenger Reservation System has been the backbone of railway ticketing since it was first introduced in 1986, replacing manual processes. Over nearly four decades, it has evolved, but the fundamental architecture has struggled to keep up with India's digital boom. In the year between June 2025 and June 2026, a staggering 89% of the 65.08 crore reserved tickets were booked online. This immense digital load, especially during high-demand windows like Tatkal bookings, often led to system slowdowns, transaction failures, and a frustrating user experience. The upgrade moves the entire infrastructure to a modern, cloud-based platform, making it more scalable, reliable, and equipped for future growth.
What This Means for Passengers
For the average traveller, this technical upgrade translates into tangible benefits. The most significant improvement will be a smoother and faster booking process, especially during peak hours. The dreaded system crashes during Tatkal booking should become far less common. With the ability to handle a much higher volume of simultaneous users, the chances of successfully securing a ticket during a flash sale or festival rush increase significantly. The Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), which developed the new system, has also focused on creating a more user-friendly and multilingual interface, making the platform more accessible to a wider range of passengers across the country.
A Phased Rollout to Ensure Stability
Indian Railways is not flipping a switch overnight. The migration from the old PRS to the new system is happening in a phased manner, which began in August 2026. This gradual approach allows officials to test the new platform under varying levels of user traffic and ensure its stability before completely phasing out the legacy system. The newly launched beta version of the IRCTC website is part of this transition, allowing the Railways to gather data and fine-tune performance. This careful, layer-by-layer migration is designed to minimize any disruption to the millions of passengers who rely on the service daily.
Part of a Broader Modernisation Drive
The PRS upgrade is a key component of a wider push by Indian Railways to modernize its services using technology. The new system will also incorporate Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, including a feature that can predict waitlist confirmation chances with high accuracy, helping passengers make more informed decisions. This move, combined with other passenger-centric reforms, signals a clear intent to leverage technology not just for operational efficiency but to fundamentally improve the travel experience. It’s about building a digital infrastructure that is as robust and reliable as the railway network it serves.
