What Exactly Is the New Visa Offer?
Abu Dhabi's Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT Abu Dhabi) has launched a new pilot programme specifically for Indian tourists. Under this initiative, the government is covering the cost of a UAE entry visa for up to 20,000 travellers. This is a limited-time
offer running from August 1 to October 31, 2026. The core of this promotion is a visa cost waiver, meaning eligible travellers will not have to pay the standard visa fee, which is approximately Dh285. It is important to understand this is not a visa-free travel scheme; you still receive an official visa, but DCT Abu Dhabi covers the expense as an incentive to boost tourism from India.
The Three-Night Rule: The Main Condition
The most significant condition attached to this offer is what many are calling the "three-night rule." To qualify for the complimentary visa, travellers must book a stay of at least three consecutive nights in a hotel in Abu Dhabi. A booking for one or two nights will not make you eligible for this specific programme. This requirement is designed to encourage visitors to spend more time exploring the emirate, rather than just using it as a short transit hub. The offer is part of a package, so simply booking a hotel for three nights independently will not unlock the free visa. The entire holiday, including flights and accommodation, must be booked as a qualifying package.
Who Is Eligible for This Offer?
This programme is targeted exclusively at Indian passport holders whose journey originates in India. To be eligible, travellers must meet a clear set of criteria. First, you must hold a valid Indian passport. Second, your travel must include a return flight ticket from India. Third, as mentioned, your booking must include a minimum of three consecutive nights in an Abu Dhabi hotel. Finally, and crucially, the entire holiday package must be booked through a participating travel partner or an approved online travel agency. You cannot apply for this visa cost waiver independently; it has to be facilitated by the travel companies partnering with DCT Abu Dhabi on this initiative.
How to Apply and Secure the Deal
The process is managed entirely through travel agencies rather than by individual applicants. The first step is to find a travel partner or online travel agency that is participating in the DCT Abu Dhabi programme. When you book your qualifying package—which must include your return flights from India and at least a three-night hotel stay in Abu Dhabi—the agency will handle the visa application on your behalf. They will either work with a Destination Management Company (DMC) appointed by DCT Abu Dhabi, which covers the cost directly, or they will be reimbursed for the visa fee after processing it through their usual channels. For the traveller, the process is simple: book the right package with the right provider, and the visa cost is automatically taken care of.
Is This Different from Other Transit Visas?
Yes, this promotional offer is completely separate from the standard transit visas offered by airlines like Etihad Airways. The UAE has long offered 48-hour and 96-hour transit visas for passengers with layovers in Abu Dhabi or Dubai. Those visas are available to a wider range of nationalities, have a small fee, and are designed for very short stays. Similarly, Etihad runs its own 'Stopover' programme which sometimes includes complimentary one or two-night hotel stays for passengers breaking up their journey. The three-night rule offer is a distinct, temporary promotion from Abu Dhabi's tourism department aimed specifically at encouraging longer stays from the Indian market, rather than facilitating short transits.
