What is Section 80D?
Section 80D is a provision in India's Income Tax Act that allows individuals to reduce their taxable income by claiming deductions for health insurance premiums paid. This tax benefit applies to policies covering yourself, your spouse, and dependent children.
The government offers this to encourage citizens to secure health coverage, which is crucial for financial stability. Unlike salaried employees who might have employer-provided group insurance, freelancers must purchase their own policies, making this deduction especially valuable for them. It’s important to note that this deduction is only available if you opt for the old tax regime; the new, simplified regime does not allow for it.
The Freelancer’s Financial Blind Spot
Unlike their salaried counterparts, freelancers don't have an employer paying a portion of their health insurance premiums. They bear the entire cost themselves, making it a significant annual expense. This is precisely why the Section 80D deduction is so critical. By reducing your total taxable income, it directly lowers the amount of tax you owe. For a young freelancer managing fluctuating income streams and building savings, every rupee saved counts. Overlooking this deduction is equivalent to paying a higher tax rate than necessary, directly impacting your take-home earnings and the funds available for reinvesting in your business or personal goals.
The Numbers: A Real-World Example
Let's consider a freelance consultant, aged 30, with a taxable income of ₹12,00,000 for the financial year 2026-27, filing under the old tax regime. Under this regime, income above ₹10 lakh falls into the 30% tax slab. Suppose this freelancer pays a ₹25,000 premium for their health insurance policy. If they fail to claim the Section 80D deduction, their entire income of ₹12,00,000 is taxed according to the slabs, resulting in a specific tax liability. However, by claiming the ₹25,000 deduction, their taxable income drops to ₹11,75,000. That entire ₹25,000 is removed from their highest tax bracket. This translates to a direct tax saving of 30% on that ₹25,000, which is ₹7,500 (plus cess). For a young professional, that's a significant saving that could cover subscription costs, software, or other business essentials.
Maximising Your Deduction Beyond the Basics
The benefits of Section 80D extend further. You can also claim an additional deduction for premiums paid for your parents' health insurance. If your parents are below 60 years of age, you can claim up to an additional ₹25,000. If they are senior citizens (aged 60 or above), this limit increases to ₹50,000. This means a young freelancer could potentially claim a total deduction of up to ₹75,000 (₹25,000 for self + ₹50,000 for senior citizen parents), leading to even greater tax savings. Furthermore, expenses for preventive health check-ups, up to ₹5,000, can also be claimed, though this amount is included within the overall limit and not in addition to it.
How to Ensure You Get the Benefit
To claim this deduction, there are a few simple rules. Firstly, the payment for the health insurance premium must be made through any mode other than cash. This includes online banking, cheques, or debit/credit cards. The only exception is for preventive health check-ups, which can be paid for in cash. When filing your Income Tax Return (ITR), you must choose the old tax regime. In the ITR form, there is a specific field under Chapter VI-A deductions where you need to enter the amount paid for health insurance premiums. It's crucial to keep the premium payment receipts and policy documents handy as proof in case the tax department requires them.
