The First Spark: School-Level Initiatives
ISRO believes in catching future scientists young. The flagship programme for school students is the 'YUva VIgyani KAryakram' (YUVIKA), or the Young Scientist Programme. This two-week residential programme is designed for students who have completed Class
9. It aims to impart basic knowledge on space science, technology, and applications, with a preference for students from rural areas. Participants get to interact with eminent scientists, attend demonstrations, visit labs, and even get hands-on experience with activities like model rocketry and assembling DIY satellite kits. The goal is to create awareness and encourage more students to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Beyond YUVIKA, ISRO also engages students through its online STEM portal, which offers certified courses, interactive sessions with scientists, and a host of educational resources.
The Premier Gateway: Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology
For students who have completed Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, the most direct path to a career at ISRO is through the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) in Thiruvananthapuram. Established by the Department of Space, IIST is Asia's first Space University and was set up specifically to meet the demands of the Indian space programme. Admission to its undergraduate programmes, such as B.Tech in Aerospace Engineering and Electronics & Communication Engineering (Avionics), is highly competitive and based on performance in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced. Students who graduate from IIST with a high CGPA (typically 7.0 or above) may be directly absorbed into ISRO as Scientist/Engineer 'SC', depending on the vacancies available. This makes IIST a coveted institution for any serious space aspirant.
The Broader Path: Engineering and Science Degrees
While IIST is a direct route, it is by no means the only one. Aspiring scientists and engineers can pursue relevant degrees from any top university and still join ISRO. The space agency regularly recruits graduates through its ISRO Centralised Recruitment Board (ICRB). Key disciplines include Electronics, Mechanical, Computer Science, Electrical, and Civil Engineering. Candidates typically need a B.E./B.Tech with a minimum aggregate of 65% marks or a CGPA of 6.84. The selection process usually involves a written test and an interview. For certain positions, a valid Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) score is also used for shortlisting candidates for interviews. So, a strong academic foundation in a core engineering or science discipline from any reputed institution is a viable and common pathway to ISRO.
Gaining Experience: Internships and Advanced Training
For those already in higher education, ISRO offers opportunities to gain practical experience. Many ISRO centres offer internships and project training for students pursuing undergraduate, postgraduate, or doctoral degrees in relevant fields. These opportunities allow students to work on real projects and gain invaluable exposure to the workings of the space agency. Another significant initiative, though aimed at an international audience, is the UNNATI (UNispace Nanosatellite Assembly & Training by ISRO) programme. This eight-week course, conducted at U.R. Rao Satellite Centre in Bengaluru, trains participants in assembling, integrating, and testing nanosatellites. While primarily for foreign nationals, it showcases the level of hands-on training that is valued and highlights opportunities for deep technical engagement within the ISRO ecosystem.
