While many coastal areas are best avoided during the monsoon, Henry's Island takes on a unique and captivating character. The rains transform the landscape into a lush, green paradise. The dense mangrove forests appear refreshed and vibrant, and the island's numerous fishponds, or 'bheris', brim with life. The overcast skies create a dramatic backdrop for the serene beaches, and the cool, rain-washed air is incredibly refreshing. Though heavy storms can make access tricky, a planned trip during a lighter spell of rain offers a romantic and peaceful experience, with far fewer tourists than in the peak winter season. The most economical way to travel is by taking the Namkhana local train from Sealdah station in Kolkata, with a ticket costing as little as ₹25. From Namkhana, shared vans and local e-rickshaws (totos) provide cheap transport to the island. Accommodation is primarily in government-run guesthouses like 'Sundari' and 'Mangrove', which are managed by the fisheries department and offer clean, basic rooms at very reasonable prices. Food is another area where you'll save. The canteens at the guesthouses serve simple, delicious Bengali home-style meals, with fresh fish curry being a highlight, all at budget-friendly rates. A two-day trip for a couple can easily be managed within a tight budget.
Planning Your Monsoon Trip
Getting to Henry's Island is a straightforward journey of about four to five hours. If travelling by car, you can drive down via Diamond Harbour and Kakdwip to Namkhana, where a new bridge over the Hatania-Doania river has made the final leg of the journey much smoother. For train travellers, the journey ends at Namkhana station, from where local transport is readily available. It is highly recommended to book your stay at the government guesthouses in advance, as they are the main accommodation options and can fill up quickly. When you arrive, make it a point to order your meals at the canteen as soon as you check in to ensure they can prepare the fresh catch for you.
