This bottleneck was particularly acute during the Tatkal booking window, where every second counts. The system, with some of its core architecture dating back decades, was simply not built for the modern scale of online transactions, where nearly 89% of all reserved tickets are now booked online.
The New Numbers Game
Indian Railways, through its technology arm, the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), has launched a next-generation, cloud-based PRS. The numbers associated with this upgrade are staggering. The new system is designed to process over 1.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute, a nearly five-fold increase in capacity. But the improvements don't stop there. The capacity for handling passenger enquiries—like checking PNR status, seat availability, and fares—has seen a tenfold jump. It has been upgraded from handling around 4 lakh enquiries per minute to over 40 lakh per minute. This dual enhancement is crucial; it means the system can not only process more transactions but also manage the immense volume of users browsing for information without slowing down the booking process for others. This massive leap in performance aims to make the entire user experience smoother and more resilient.
What This Means for Passengers
For the average passenger, these technical upgrades translate into very real, tangible benefits. The most significant impact will be felt during peak-demand periods. The increased capacity means a much lower chance of the website or app crashing under heavy load. This gives every user a fairer and less stressful chance at securing a confirmed ticket, especially for last-minute Tatkal bookings. The transition to the new system is already showing positive results. According to IRCTC data from the new beta website launched in July 2026, Tatkal bookings completed within the first three minutes of the window opening improved by over 5%. This indicates that the system is more responsive and can handle the initial, most intense rush more effectively. Furthermore, the upgraded PRS will feature a multilingual interface, making it more accessible to a wider range of users across the country.
How the Upgrade Was Achieved
This isn't just a minor software patch; it's a fundamental overhaul of the technological backbone of India's railway reservation network. The old system was based on server technology from 2010. The new PRS is a modern, cloud-based platform. This shift to the cloud provides greater scalability and flexibility, allowing the system to dynamically allocate resources to handle sudden traffic spikes. Developed by CRIS, the project also incorporates modern technologies like AI and machine learning. These tools are not just for booking but are also being used for applications like predicting train delays and improving waitlist confirmation forecasts, adding another layer of intelligence to the network. The migration is being done in a phased manner, meaning the old system won't be switched off overnight. Trains are being moved to the new system progressively to ensure stability and minimise any disruption to the 24/7 service.
