As of May 2026, Sri Lanka has waived the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) fee for Indian passport holders, along with citizens from several other countries. While headlines often use the term "visa-free," it's important to know that you must still
apply for and obtain an ETA online before your departure. The good news is that the process is now free of charge. This ETA is typically valid for a 30-day stay and allows for double entry, which is more than enough for a five-day backpacking trip. Remember, on-arrival visa applications are no longer accepted, so securing your ETA beforehand is mandatory.
Your 5-Day Coastal Adventure Itinerary
This itinerary focuses on the stunning southern coast, known for its beautiful beaches, colonial architecture, and the iconic scenic train journey. It’s a classic route that is both budget-friendly and packed with memorable experiences, making it ideal for a short trip. The journey will take you from the bustling capital of Colombo down to the historic fort city of Galle and the relaxed beach town of Mirissa, offering a perfect blend of sightseeing and relaxation.
Day 1: Arrival and Colombo's Vibe
Fly into Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) and make your way to a hostel in Colombo. You can find dorm beds for as low as ₹800–₹1000 per night. Once settled, spend the afternoon exploring. Take a walk along Galle Face Green, a sprawling urban park by the sea, and witness a stunning sunset. Day 2: The Scenic Train to Galle
Experience one of the world's most beautiful train journeys. Head to Colombo Fort station and catch a morning train to Galle. The ride takes about two to three hours and hugs the coastline, offering breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean. For the best views, try to get a seat on the right side of the train. Upon arrival in Galle, check into your hostel and spend the rest of the day exploring the Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Day 3: Mirissa's Whales and Beaches
From Galle, take a short bus or tuk-tuk ride to the laid-back beach town of Mirissa. This area is world-famous for whale watching. The prime season for spotting blue whales and dolphins is from November to April, when the seas are calm. Tours typically leave early in the morning and last three to five hours. Spend the afternoon relaxing on Mirissa’s crescent-shaped beach, swimming in the turquoise waters, or learning to surf. As evening approaches, enjoy dinner at one of the many beachfront restaurants with your feet in the sand.
Day 4: Exploring Southern Beaches
Use this day to explore the surrounding coastal areas. You can rent a scooter or use local buses to visit nearby beaches like Unawatuna, known for its calm waters and coral reefs, or Weligama, famous for its stilt fishermen. Hiriketiya, a little further east, is another beautiful horseshoe-shaped bay that's a haven for surfers. This is a great opportunity to beach-hop, find a quiet spot to read, and simply soak in the tropical atmosphere before heading back to your base.
Day 5: Return Journey to Colombo
On your final day, make your way back towards Colombo for your flight home. You can take a direct bus from Mirissa or Galle, which is the most economical option. Depending on your flight schedule, you might have time for some last-minute souvenir shopping at Pettah Market in Colombo or to grab a final Sri Lankan meal. Plan to arrive at the airport with plenty of time to spare for a stress-free departure.
Budgeting 101 for Indian Students
Sri Lanka is very backpacker-friendly. For a five-day trip, a budget of ₹12,000 to ₹15,000 (excluding flights) is a realistic target. Accommodation in hostels can range from ₹800-₹1500 per night. Local meals like rice and curry cost just a few hundred rupees. Public transport, especially trains and buses, is extremely cheap, with long-distance journeys often costing less than ₹500. The biggest expense will likely be activities like whale watching, which can cost several thousand rupees, so be sure to factor that into your budget.
