A Note on Pricing
The following costs are estimates for a family of four, based on average market prices in major Indian cities as of October 2026. Prices for fresh produce and staples can fluctuate significantly based on season, region, and retailer. We have not included
the cost of cooking oil, ghee, and common spices like turmeric, chilli powder, and salt, as these are typically bought in larger quantities and their per-dish cost is minimal, though they are a recurring kitchen expense. All calculations are approximate and intended as a general guide.
1. Dal Tadka: The Everyday Essential
A staple in almost every Indian household, dal tadka is the definition of comfort food. It is nutritious, simple, and incredibly budget-friendly. To serve a family of four, you would need about 150 grams of toor dal. With toor dal prices hovering around ₹130 to ₹150 per kilogram, the dal itself costs approximately ₹20-23. The other key ingredients are onions, tomatoes, garlic, and green chillies for the 'tadka' (tempering). Factoring in about 100g of onion (₹3), 100g of tomato (prices can be volatile but let's estimate ₹10-15), and a small amount of garlic and chillies (₹5), the total comes to a very reasonable figure. This makes dal tadka one of the most economical and wholesome meals you can prepare. Estimated Cost: ₹38 – ₹46
2. Aloo Gobi: The Comforting Classic
Aloo Gobi, a simple dry curry of potatoes and cauliflower, is a lunchbox favourite and a weeknight dinner hero. The main components are one medium cauliflower (around 500g) and two medium potatoes (around 300g). Vegetable prices have seen some volatility. As of late 2026, cauliflower could cost around ₹30 (for 500g, based on a price of ₹60/kg) and potatoes around ₹10 (based on a price of ₹30/kg). Add in one onion (₹3) and one tomato (₹10-15) for the base masala. This hearty and satisfying dish remains an affordable choice for a family meal, despite recent increases in vegetable prices. Estimated Cost: ₹53 – ₹58
3. Palak Paneer: The Nutritious Favourite
A healthier but equally delicious option, Palak Paneer combines soft cheese cubes in a flavourful spinach gravy. The key costs are spinach and paneer. A large bunch of spinach (around 500g) will cost approximately ₹20-25. For a family of four, 200g of paneer is usually sufficient. A 200g block of paneer from a reputable brand costs between ₹88 and ₹100. Add another ₹15-20 for onion, tomato, and garlic to form the gravy base. While slightly more expensive than a simple vegetable or lentil dish, its nutritional value and rich flavour make it a popular choice for a wholesome family dinner. Estimated Cost: ₹123 – ₹145
4. Paneer Butter Masala: The Restaurant-Style Treat
This is the dish many people order at restaurants, but it is surprisingly straightforward to make at home. It is, however, one of the pricier options on this list. The primary cost is the paneer (200g for ₹88-100). The rich, creamy gravy requires a higher quantity of tomatoes (around 300g, costing ₹30-45 given recent price spikes) and often includes cashews (around 25g, adding about ₹25) and fresh cream (a small pack for ₹25-30). While the total cost is higher, it is still significantly less than what you would pay for four individual portions at a restaurant. Estimated Cost: ₹168 – ₹200
5. Vegetable Pulao: The One-Pot Wonder
A fragrant and flavourful one-pot meal, vegetable pulao is perfect for a quick lunch or a light dinner. The foundation is good quality Basmati rice. For a family of four, you'd use about 300g of rice. With 1kg of decent Basmati costing between ₹90 and ₹130, the rice portion would be about ₹27-40. For the vegetables, a mix of carrots, peas, beans, and potatoes (around 400g total) would add another ₹30-40 to the cost. Onions and whole spices for flavouring might add another ₹10. It’s a complete meal that delivers a lot of flavour for a moderate cost. Estimated Cost: ₹67 – ₹90
