Three ODI Double Centuries
Scoring a double century in a 50-over match is a rare feat, a blend of immense stamina, skill, and opportunity. Many great batsmen have retired without one. Rohit Sharma has done it three times. His first was a blistering 209 against Australia in 2013.
He followed this with the current world record score of 264 against Sri Lanka in 2014, and then an unbeaten 208, again against Sri Lanka, in 2017. To put this in perspective, no other player in the history of men's cricket has managed more than one. This record showcases not just his ability to start an innings, but to completely dominate it and play on a level that others can't seem to reach even once.
The Highest ODI Score: 264
Of his three double tons, the innings of 264 against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens stands as a towering monument in cricket history. It remains the highest individual score ever in a One Day International. What made the innings so special was its structure; after a cautious start, he exploded. In a stunning display of acceleration, Sharma scored his final 214 runs at a blistering pace, leaving fielders and bowlers helpless. He was famously dropped on just four runs, a mistake Sri Lanka paid for heavily as he went on to single-handedly outscore their entire team, who were bowled out for 251. The sheer magnitude of the number 264 makes it a benchmark that seems almost impossible to surpass in a 50-over game.
Most Scores of 150-Plus
While double centuries grab headlines, Rohit’s consistency in scoring 'daddy hundreds' is arguably just as impressive. He holds the record for the most scores of 150 or more in ODIs, having achieved this feat eight times. This is more than cricketing legends like David Warner (seven), Sachin Tendulkar (five), and Chris Gayle (five). This record speaks volumes about his temperament and his unique ability to convert a good start into a match-defining, mammoth score. It shows a pattern of domination; when Rohit gets set, he aims not just for a century but to bat deep into the innings and take the game completely away from the opposition, a quality that makes him exceptionally dangerous.
Most Fours in a Single Innings
During his world-record knock of 264, Rohit Sharma also set another incredible record: the most fours hit in a single ODI innings. He struck the boundary rope a staggering 33 times, a display of placement and timing as much as power. This record surpassed the previous best of 25, jointly held by Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag. While modern ODI batting is often associated with clearing the ropes, this record highlights Rohit's mastery over finding gaps in the field. It demonstrates a 360-degree command of the ground and an ability to score heavily without taking the high-risk aerial route on every ball, showcasing a different, more surgical kind of batting dominance.
Five Centuries in One World Cup
Performing on the biggest stage is what defines a champion, and Rohit Sharma did exactly that during the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup. He scored an unprecedented five centuries in a single tournament, breaking the previous record of four held by Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara. This feat underscored his incredible form and consistency under the immense pressure of a World Cup. He ended the tournament as the leading run-scorer, with his centuries coming against top-quality opposition like South Africa, Pakistan, England, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. To maintain such a high level of performance over a long and demanding tournament is a monumental achievement, one that will be incredibly difficult for any player to replicate.
