More Than a 'Superficial Transformation'
For many demanding roles, actors are praised for dramatic weight gain or loss. Ranbir Kapoor, however, believed that approach was too superficial for embodying Lord Ram in Nitesh Tiwari's epic, Ramayana. In his own words, physical preparation like building
a body or learning action sequences is 'kind of easy'. The real challenge, he explained, was to deeply understand the philosophy of Lord Ram at this stage in his life. This perspective shifted his entire preparation process from the external to the internal. The goal wasn't just to look like a mythical king but to connect with the values he represents: compassion, courage, and righteousness. He aimed for a portrayal that was simple, relatable, and could resonate with an audience of any age, from eight to eighty.
A Two-Year Spiritual Deep Dive
To connect with the essence of the character, Kapoor dedicated two years to a disciplined spiritual routine before filming even began. This journey involved extensive reading of various versions and interpretations of the Ramayana and other religious texts. He also consulted with numerous scholars to gain deeper insights into the scriptures. A significant part of his preparation involved yoga and meditation, which he practiced for hours with a dedicated guru named Suvir. Kapoor shared that these meditation sessions were crucial in getting him 'really close to the teachings of Lord Rama'. This immersive process was about understanding the character's mindset, values, and the profound calm that defines him.
Embodying Divinity Through Discipline
The internal work was supported by immense external discipline. Reports surfaced that Kapoor made significant lifestyle changes to align himself with the purity of the character. This included quitting alcohol and adopting a strict vegetarian diet. His trainer also revealed that the preparation focused on subtleties far beyond muscle. Specialists were brought in to guide him on posture, breathing exercises, and how to carry himself with the quiet dignity required for the role. This holistic approach ensures that every movement and gesture is informed by the character's inner state. Director Nitesh Tiwari noted that Lord Ram was a man of few words whose pain was felt rather than seen, requiring an actor who could convey strength and emotion with subtlety, a quality he saw in Kapoor.
The Director's Vision and an Actor's Surrender
This intensive preparation was guided by director Nitesh Tiwari's specific vision. Tiwari stated he chose Kapoor because the demanding role required someone who could portray unbound love, quiet pain, and physical courage, all while managing the expectations of a billion people. The director saw the necessary qualities in Kapoor's eyes and praised his sincerity and dedication. Rather than trying to modernize the epic, Tiwari's focus has been on its timeless and universal values, which he felt the world had forgotten. Kapoor embraced this vision, focusing on the emotional and spiritual core of the character. He explained that by deeply understanding who the character is and what he stands for, the performance naturally follows. This surrender to the character's philosophy over mere physical mimicry is at the heart of his portrayal.
