Massive Boost in Speed and Capacity
The most significant upgrade is a massive increase in the portal's backend capacity, designed to tackle the infamous slowdowns during peak hours and Tatkal bookings. The new system is built to handle over 1.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute, a nearly
five-fold increase from the previous capacity of around 32,000. Additionally, the Passenger Reservation System (PRS) can now manage over 40 lakh inquiries per minute, up from just 4 lakh. For frequent travelers, this translates to fewer crashes, faster page loads, and a much lower chance of getting timed out during a critical booking session. The upgrade was prompted in part by students who raised concerns about the website's performance directly with the Union Railway Minister.
A Cleaner, More Intuitive Interface
One of the most welcome changes is the redesigned user interface, which aims to reduce clutter and streamline the booking process. The new portal promises fewer interruptions from unnecessary pop-ups, flashing banners, and most notably, repeated CAPTCHA verifications that often frustrated users. The goal is to provide a cleaner, distraction-free path from searching for a train to confirming a payment. Frequent bookers who have passenger details saved will find the process even quicker, with fewer steps required to complete a transaction.
Smarter Tools for Flexible Travel
The updated website introduces several new features that give passengers more control and information. A new fare calendar allows users to compare ticket prices across different dates, helping those with flexible travel plans find the most economical option. Another key addition is the ability for passengers to specify their preferred seats during the booking process, rather than having one assigned randomly. These tools bring the platform more in line with modern travel booking websites, offering a more user-centric approach to planning a journey.
Unified View of Seat Availability
Previously, checking for available seats meant toggling between different classes like Sleeper, AC 3 Tier, and AC 2 Tier one by one. The updated system eliminates this tedious process. Now, passengers can view seat availability across all classes on a single screen. This small but powerful change saves time and allows for quicker comparison, helping users make faster and more informed decisions about their booking without needing to navigate back and forth between multiple pages.
Enhanced Accessibility for All Users
Recognizing India's diverse user base, the new portal will support multiple Indian languages, making it more accessible to people who are not comfortable with English. Furthermore, the platform integrates services for different concession groups. Bookings for Divyangjan, students, and patients, which previously may have required separate processes, are now consolidated into a single, unified system. This streamlines the process for those availing concessions, making it more efficient and user-friendly.
