The Game-Changing Flight
Until recently, reaching Daman from Delhi involved a lengthy train journey or a flight to a nearby city followed by a long drive. That's now history with the launch of direct flights operated by Alliance Air from Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport
to Daman's NAMO Airport. This new service drastically cuts down travel time, transforming a once-arduous journey into a convenient flight of approximately three hours. The direct connection makes a spontaneous weekend trip to the Arabian Sea coast a realistic and tempting option for Delhiites, saving travellers more than 10 hours compared to previous rail and road combinations.
Why Daman for a Weekend?
Daman offers a unique blend of experiences that set it apart from other weekend destinations. It’s a compact city where serene beaches meet four centuries of Portuguese colonial history. The town is divided by the Daman Ganga River into two parts: Nani Daman (Little Daman) and Moti Daman (Big Daman). This geography provides a diverse landscape of bustling waterfronts, quiet historic quarters, and beautiful coastlines. Unlike larger, more crowded tourist spots, Daman provides a slower, more relaxed pace of life, making it the perfect antidote to city stress. Within a short trip, you can explore impressive forts, wander through colonial-era churches, relax on the beach, and enjoy fresh seafood.
A Walk Through History: Forts and Churches
Daman’s past is etched into its stunning architecture. The Moti Daman Fort, with construction that began in 1559, is a massive complex that once housed the entire Portuguese administration. Within its walls, you'll find a lighthouse and historic churches like the Cathedral of Bom Jesus, which is renowned for its intricate Portuguese woodwork and ornate altar. Across the river in Nani Daman stands the smaller St. Jerome Fort, which encloses the Church of Our Lady of the Sea and offers picturesque views of the fishing boats on the river. Wandering through these forts feels like stepping back in time, with cobbled streets and colonial buildings offering a glimpse into the region's rich heritage.
Beach Guide: From Calm Sands to Lively Promenades
Daman’s coastline features two main beaches, each with a distinct personality. Jampore Beach, located in the south, is the more traditional sandy beach. It's known for its calm, blackish-hued sand and is safe for swimming. This is the hub for activities like parasailing, ATV rides, and horse riding, with numerous shacks serving food and drinks. In contrast, Devka Beach in the north is a rocky beach with a beautiful promenade. While swimming is not permitted due to the rocks, it comes alive in the evenings with an amusement park, musical fountains, and food stalls, making it a popular spot for leisurely strolls and watching the sunset.
A Taste of the Coast
A trip to Daman is incomplete without sampling its unique cuisine, which is a fusion of Gujarati, Parsi, and Portuguese influences. Given its location, fresh seafood is the star of the show. You’ll find an abundance of fish and prawn curries, often prepared with a blend of Indian spices and Portuguese culinary techniques like the use of vinegar. Many beachside shacks on Jampore Beach offer delicious, freshly caught seafood. Beyond seafood, the region is also known for some distinctive dishes and local sweets that reflect its multicultural heritage. Exploring the local eateries and restaurants provides a delicious insight into the culture of Daman.
Planning Your Short Break
A two to three-day trip is ideal for exploring Daman's main attractions. The best time to visit is between October and March when the weather is pleasant and ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities. Once in Daman, local transport options like auto-rickshaws are readily available to get around between Nani and Moti Daman. A sample itinerary could include spending a day exploring the forts and churches of Moti Daman, followed by an evening stroll at Devka Beach. The next day could be dedicated to water sports and relaxation at Jampore Beach, exploring the lanes of Nani Daman, and enjoying a final seafood dinner before your flight back.
