Monitor the Official Sources First
Your first and most reliable source of information should always be official Indian Railways channels. Announcements for special trains, such as those for the upcoming Diwali and Chhath Puja season, are posted on the Indian Railways website (indianrail.gov.in)
and the IRCTC portal (irctc.co.in). Bookings can be made via the IRCTC website, the official mobile apps, or at station reservation counters. Special trains are often identified by a train number beginning with '0'. When searching for trains on your route, these special services will appear alongside regular ones once they have been officially announced. It’s wise to check these platforms regularly, as trains are often announced in phases based on demand.
Use the Right Apps for Real-Time Tracking
For on-the-go updates, the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) is an indispensable tool. Developed by CRIS, the IT wing of Indian Railways, the NTES app is the official source for real-time train information. It allows you to track the live running status of any train, check its schedule, and see which trains are cancelled, rescheduled, or diverted. This is crucial, as special trains can sometimes be subject to changes. The app provides information fed directly from the railway's operational systems, making it more accurate than many third-party sources. For booking, the official 'IRCTC Rail Connect' app for Android and iOS is the designated platform.
Leverage Social Media and Alerts
In today's digital age, social media is a powerful tool for quick information. The Ministry of Railways and the various Zonal Railways (like Northern Railway or Western Railway) are very active on X (formerly Twitter). They often post press releases and updates about new special train services directly to their feeds. Following the official handle of the Ministry (@RailMinIndia) and the Divisional Railway Managers (DRMs) for your specific route can give you a head start. For a more passive approach, consider setting up Google Alerts with keywords like "Indian Railways special trains" or "festival special trains" combined with your city names. This will send notifications directly to your inbox when news outlets report on new announcements.
Be Prepared to Book Instantly
Special train tickets, especially on popular routes during peak festival seasons, can be sold out within minutes or hours of bookings opening. Preparation is key. Before an announcement is even made, ensure your IRCTC account is active and you remember your password. It is highly recommended to create and save a 'Master List' of passengers (with names, ages, and ID details) in your IRCTC profile. This feature allows you to auto-populate passenger details during booking, saving precious seconds. Keep your preferred payment methods, like UPI, credit/debit cards, or e-wallets, ready for a swift checkout. The window between announcement and booking is often very short, so being ready to act decisively is your biggest advantage.
Stay Flexible and Have a Backup Plan
Securing a ticket on a special train often requires a degree of flexibility. Be open to travelling a day or two before or after your ideal date, as special services may not run daily. Consider boarding from a nearby station rather than the main city hub, as these may have better seat availability. Similarly, be flexible with your travel class; sometimes 3AC might have seats when Sleeper class is full, or vice versa. Despite best efforts, a confirmed ticket may not always be possible. It is always prudent to have a Plan B. This could involve looking at alternative train routes, or even considering other modes of transport like buses as a fallback option to ensure your travel plans are not entirely derailed.
