Day 1: The Wardrobe Reset
Your journey to a festive-ready home begins in the wardrobe, often the biggest source of hidden clutter. Pull everything out. Yes, everything. Create three piles: Keep, Donate/Sell, and Trash. The rule is simple: if you haven't worn it in a year, or if it doesn't
make you feel great, it's time to let it go. For sentimental items you can't part with, ask yourself if you can store just one or two representative pieces. Refold what you keep and organise by category (workwear, casuals, festive wear). You'll be amazed at the space you create for those new festival outfits.
Day 2: Conquer the Kitchen
A festive home needs a functional kitchen. Start by clearing your countertops. Find a home for every appliance that isn’t used daily. Next, tackle the pantry and fridge. Check expiry dates on spices, sauces, and packaged goods. Be ruthless—that packet of exotic flour you bought for a recipe you never made? It's time to say goodbye. Wipe down all shelves and reorganise. Group similar items together: all your masalas in one place, dals and grains in another. This will make cooking for guests (or just for yourself) a much more pleasant experience.
Day 3: The Living Room Refresh
This is the space where you'll host friends and family, so it deserves special attention. Start with surfaces. Clear coffee tables and side tables of old magazines, random chargers, and accumulated knick-knacks. Assign a designated drawer or box for 'homeless' items like remotes and keys. Go through your bookshelves—are there books you've read and won't read again? Consider donating them. Straighten cushions, dust all surfaces, and give the floor a good sweep or mop. The goal is to create a welcoming, open space that feels ready for celebration.
Day 4: Tackle the Desk and Digital Clutter
In a modern youth apartment, the work-from-home desk is often a clutter magnet. Sort through piles of paper, file important documents, and shred what you no longer need. Organise stationery in a drawer or a pen stand. But don’t stop there. Take 30 minutes to tackle your digital clutter. Unsubscribe from junk email newsletters, delete old files from your desktop, and organise your photos into folders. A clear digital space contributes just as much to your mental peace as a clear physical one.
Day 5: The Bathroom and Balcony Blitz
These smaller spaces are quick wins. In the bathroom, go through your toiletries and cosmetics. Discard any expired products or samples you’ll never use. Wipe down the mirror, counter, and shelves for an instant sparkle. For the balcony, sweep away dust and leaves. If it has become a storage ground for forgotten things, it's time to reclaim it. A small, clean balcony can be a wonderful spot to enjoy a cup of chai during the festive mornings.
Day 6 & 7: The Final Touches and Donation Run
You’re almost there! Use the final two days for finishing touches. Change your bedsheets and towels to fresh ones. Empty all the trash bins. Now, deal with the 'Donate/Sell' piles you've created. Bag them up and drop them off at a local charity or list them online. Getting them out of the house is the final, crucial step. Finally, light a diya or some nice incense. Take a moment to appreciate your clean, organised, and peaceful home. You’ve successfully completed the challenge and made space for all the good things the festive season has to offer.
