Walk down any supermarket aisle in India, and you'll find them: diet sodas, sugar-free yoghurts, keto-friendly sweets, and protein bars all proudly bearing 'zero-sugar' or 'no added sugar' labels. For those managing weight, diabetes, or simply trying
to make healthier choices, these products have long seemed like the perfect solution. They offer the sweetness we crave without the calories or the blood sugar spike associated with traditional sugar. These products rely on non-nutritive sweeteners (NNS) — like aspartame, sucralose, and stevia — which provide intense sweetness with virtually no energy value. The logic has always been simple: if they have no calories and don't raise blood sugar, they must be a better choice. But a growing body of scientific evidence is now challenging that long-held belief.
What the New Science Says
The latest scrutiny comes from studies looking at the gut microbiome—the trillions of bacteria and other microbes living in our digestive systems. For a long time, sweeteners were thought to pass through the body without being metabolised. However, very recent laboratory research from mid-2026 suggests this isn't the whole story. A study from the University of Cambridge found that a majority of common sweeteners directly interfered with the growth of gut bacteria in lab tests. This challenges the idea that they are simply inactive substances. The research indicates that sweeteners like saccharin and sucralose can shift the balance of our gut flora, a condition known as dysbiosis. Some studies suggest these changes may be linked to negative health outcomes like glucose intolerance, the very thing many consumers use them to avoid.
Why Your Gut Bacteria Matter
The gut microbiome is more than just a digestive aid; it's a critical organ that influences everything from our immune system and mood to our metabolism and body weight. A healthy, diverse microbiome helps produce essential vitamins, break down fibre, and protect us from pathogens. In 2023, the World Health Organization (WHO) released a guideline advising against using non-sugar sweeteners for weight control, citing a lack of evidence for long-term benefits and potential links to increased risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. In India, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has taken a measured approach. While it has approved several sweeteners like aspartame, sucralose, and acesulfame potassium for use within set limits, it has also clarified its stance. FSSAI officials have stated that they do not endorse these sweeteners for weight loss and will establish India-specific guidelines based on local research, noting that the dietary habits of the Indian population differ significantly from those in the West.
