Across Indian campuses, students are increasingly integrating AI-powered tools into their academic workflows. This isn't about asking a chatbot to write an essay. It’s about leveraging specialised platforms like Elicit, Consensus, and Scite.ai to revolutionise
the tedious process of literature review. These AI assistants are designed to sift through thousands of academic papers in seconds, helping to summarise findings, extract key data, and map out conversations within a field of study. For example, a student can ask a tool like Consensus a direct question, and it will return a summary of findings from peer-reviewed studies. Elicit can go a step further, creating structured tables comparing methodologies and outcomes from various papers, a task that once took weeks of manual labour.
Efficiency and Deeper Discovery
The most immediate benefit is a massive gain in efficiency. Students at universities like NIIT can now spend less time on the burdensome tasks of searching for information and more time on critical thinking and analysis. These tools can surface relevant papers that might have been missed in a traditional keyword search, broadening a student's understanding of a topic. They help learners quickly grasp the state of play on a particular research question, identifying the major arguments, key evidence, and gaps in existing literature. This aligns with the goals of India's National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes technology-enabled learning and innovation. In a competitive academic environment, being able to accelerate the initial research phase gives students a significant edge, allowing them to move more quickly to analysis and original thought.
The Risk of Outsourcing Thought
However, this growing reliance on AI is not without its perils. A significant concern among educators is the risk of over-reliance, which could erode fundamental research skills. If a student only ever reads AI-generated summaries, they miss the nuance, methodological rigour, and critical context of the original papers. There are also concerns about accuracy; AI models can 'hallucinate' or misinterpret information, and students are still responsible for every claim they make. Some faculty worry that this could lead to a generation of graduates who are unable to perform deep analysis on their own. Furthermore, the uncritical use of AI can lead to issues of plagiarism and data privacy, creating new challenges for academic integrity.
How Universities Are Responding
Indian higher education institutions are navigating this new reality with a mix of caution and enthusiasm. A 2025 report by FICCI and EY found that over 60% of surveyed institutions now permit students to use AI tools. Many, however, are still in the process of developing formal policies. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued advisory guidelines, emphasizing that while AI can be used as an assistant, the student remains fully responsible for their work and must disclose their use of such tools. Institutions like JECRC University and Amity University have moved to integrate AI across all disciplines, from law to media, and are implementing structured faculty development to keep pace. The consensus is that banning these tools is not a viable long-term solution. Instead, the focus is shifting towards teaching students how to use them ethically and effectively.
