The Weather Forecast
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a wet spell across the southern peninsula, with alerts for heavy to very heavy rainfall in several states. From October 15, regions including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry, and South Interior Karnataka
are expected to receive significant showers. This prolonged wet weather is due to the onset of the northeast monsoon, which typically follows the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon and brings substantial rainfall to the south. The IMD has specifically warned of widespread rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds, which are all factors that can directly influence airport operations.
Flight Delays and Cancellations
The primary concern for passengers is the potential for flight delays and cancellations. Heavy rain, strong crosswinds, and poor visibility can make take-offs and landings unsafe, forcing airlines to adjust their schedules. Airports in Chennai, Bengaluru, and Kochi are accustomed to monsoon conditions, but intense spells can still lead to operational disruptions. Even short bursts of severe weather can cause a domino effect, leading to cascading delays throughout the day. It is a common strategy for airlines to delay or divert flights circling an airport until conditions improve. Passengers should anticipate that their flight times may change with little notice.
Stay Updated and In Communication
Airlines and airport authorities are advising all passengers to stay updated on their flight status. Before heading to the airport, check your airline's website or mobile app for the latest information. Airlines will typically communicate any changes via SMS or email, so ensure your contact details are correctly registered with your booking. Following your airline and departure airport's official social media accounts can also provide real-time updates. Proactive communication from the airline is a crucial part of managing disruptions, but it is always wise for travellers to take the initiative and check for themselves.
Getting to the Airport
Disruptions are not limited to the air. Heavy rainfall frequently causes waterlogging and traffic congestion on roads leading to major airports. This can significantly increase your travel time. Plan to leave for the airport much earlier than you normally would to account for potential delays on the ground. In cities with metro connectivity, such as Bengaluru and Chennai, the metro can be a more reliable option as it is generally unaffected by road conditions. Ride-hailing services often implement surge pricing during periods of heavy rain, so be prepared for higher fares.
Packing and Preparation
Given the possibility of extended waits, it is wise to pack your carry-on luggage strategically. Include essentials like any necessary medications, a portable power bank for your devices, snacks, and a water bottle. If travelling with children, pack items to keep them comfortable and occupied. Dressing in layers is also advisable, as terminal temperatures can vary. To protect your belongings, consider using waterproof bags or covers for your luggage and electronic gadgets. A little preparation can make a long delay much more manageable.
Knowing Your Rights as a Passenger
It is helpful to be aware of your rights. According to regulations from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), if a flight is delayed, airlines are obligated to provide assistance. For delays over two hours, passengers are generally entitled to refreshments. If a delay exceeds six hours, the airline should offer you meals and the choice of an alternative flight or a full refund. However, it's important to note that weather-related disruptions are considered 'Act of God' events, which can sometimes affect compensation policies. The primary responsibility of the airline remains ensuring passenger safety.
