Bir Billing, Himachal Pradesh: The Paragliding Capital
Often hailed as the paragliding capital of India, Bir Billing is a world-renowned destination that hosted the Paragliding World Cup in 2015. Located in the stunning Kangra Valley, this site offers an experience that is hard to match. The take-off point
is at Billing, situated at an altitude of about 2,400 metres, while the landing occurs in the village of Bir, some 900 metres below. This vast altitude difference allows for long flights, typically lasting from 15 to 30 minutes, with views of the snow-clad Dhauladhar range, lush tea gardens, and Tibetan monasteries. The reliable thermal conditions make it a favourite for both tandem flyers and professional solo pilots. The best time to visit is from March to June and September to November, when the weather is ideal for flying.
Solang Valley, Manali: Tourist-Friendly Thrills
Nestled just 14 kilometres from Manali, the Solang Valley is a hub for adventure sports, and paragliding is one of its main attractions. It offers two levels of flights: a shorter, low-altitude flight perfect for beginners and a higher, longer flight that takes off from a greater height, offering more extensive views of the valley and surrounding peaks. While flights here are generally shorter than in Bir Billing, the breathtaking scenery of the Pir Panjal mountains and the Beas River below makes it an unforgettable experience. Solang is particularly popular with tourists looking for a quick taste of adventure. The ideal seasons are April to June and the post-monsoon months.
Kamshet, Maharashtra: Soaring Over the Sahyadris
For those in Western India, Kamshet is the go-to destination for paragliding. Conveniently located about 100 km from Mumbai and 45 km from Pune, this spot in the Sahyadri range offers a different but equally beautiful landscape. The take-off points are from smaller, rounded hills, and the flights offer views of the Pawna Lake and lush green plateaus. Kamshet is also a major centre for paragliding schools, making it an excellent place to take a certified training course. The flying season is long, running from October to May, thanks to the consistent and predictable wind conditions. It's an ideal choice for a weekend adventure away from the city hustle.
Bhimtal and Nainital, Uttarakhand: Gliding Over Lakes
The Kumaon region of Uttarakhand offers a unique paragliding experience with stunning aerial views of its famous lakes. While Nainital is the more famous hill station, the primary paragliding activities are centered around Bhimtal and Naukuchiatal. Taking off from a ridge, you'll glide over the serene waters of Bhimtal Lake, surrounded by green hills. Flights typically last between 5 to 20 minutes, depending on the chosen package and wind conditions. This region offers a more tranquil flying experience compared to the bustling sites in Himachal. The best seasons are from March to June and September to December, when the skies are clear and the weather is pleasant.
Gangtok, Sikkim: Himalayan Majesty in the East
For a truly majestic Himalayan experience, head to Gangtok in Sikkim. Paragliding here offers awe-inspiring views of the Kanchenjunga range and the sprawling, terraced valleys of the Eastern Himalayas. There are certified launch points at different altitudes, such as Baliman Dara and Bulbuley Dara, offering both medium and high-altitude flights. A tandem flight gives you a bird's-eye perspective of Gangtok town, its monasteries, and the pristine mountain landscape. The region is quickly becoming a favourite for adventure enthusiasts looking to explore the lesser-flown skies of Northeast India. The recommended flying seasons are from March to June and September to December.
