The Aadhaar Update: What’s Free and Why It Matters
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is strongly encouraging residents to keep their demographic data current, especially for Aadhaar cards issued over a decade ago. To facilitate this, UIDAI has extended its free online document update
service. You can update your Proof of Identity (PoI) and Proof of Address (PoA) documents without any cost through the myAadhaar portal. This free service is available only for online submissions. If you choose to visit a physical Aadhaar Seva Kendra for these updates, a fee of ₹75 will be applicable. Keeping your details accurate ensures better service delivery and successful authentication for banking, government schemes, and other essential services. Note that this free service does not apply to biometric updates (fingerprints, iris, photo) or demographic changes like name or date of birth, which follow a different fee structure.
How to Update Your Aadhaar Details
For online document updates, the process is straightforward. First, log in to the myAadhaar portal (myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in) using your Aadhaar number and the one-time password (OTP) sent to your registered mobile number. Once logged in, select ‘Document Update’. Your existing details will be displayed for verification. You will then be prompted to upload clear, scanned copies of your PoI and PoA documents. Accepted documents include items like a passport, voter ID card, ration card, or recent utility bills, among others. For any changes to your mobile number, email, or biometrics, a visit to an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre is mandatory. Remember to bring your original documents for verification when visiting a centre.
Passport Renewal: Planning is Everything
Your passport is your gateway to the world, but an expired one can halt travel plans instantly. Most countries require your passport to be valid for at least six months from your date of entry. This makes timely renewal critical. In India, the process is managed through the Ministry of External Affairs' Passport Seva portal. You don't 'renew' a passport in the traditional sense; you apply for a 'Re-issue'. This can be done for an expiring or expired passport, or if you've run out of pages. It is recommended to start the renewal process at least nine months before expiry to avoid any last-minute complications.
Navigating the Passport Re-issue Process
The re-issue process begins online. First, register and log in to the Passport Seva website (passportindia.gov.in). Fill out the 'Re-issue of Passport' application form, pay the requisite fee online, and schedule an appointment at your nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK). On the day of your appointment, you must visit the centre with your original old passport and self-attested copies of its first and last two pages, along with proof of address and other necessary documents. Your photograph and biometrics will be captured at the centre. The Ministry has also streamlined the process by integrating with DigiLocker, allowing applicants to use digitally saved documents for their applications, reducing the need to carry multiple physical copies.
Why You Shouldn’t Delay These Updates
An outdated Aadhaar can lead to failed e-KYC authentications, which can affect everything from opening a bank account and filing taxes to receiving government subsidies. Similarly, an expired passport or one with less than six months' validity can result in being denied boarding for an international flight. The administrative processes for both documents take time. A passport re-issue under normal processing can take several working days after your appointment, and that's without accounting for the time to get an appointment slot. Police verification, which may be required, can add to the timeline. Treating these updates as urgent tasks and scheduling them well in advance ensures your essential documents remain valid and functional when you need them most.
