To address this critical gap, the India Meteorological Department has enhanced its public services with route-specific weather forecasts. Accessible through the official IMD website and associated platforms, this service provides detailed weather information along major national highways and transport corridors. Instead of just a forecast for a city, travellers can now get a granular view of the weather conditions they will encounter throughout their entire journey. This includes predictions for temperature, rainfall, wind speed, and visibility. The service is part of a broader effort by the IMD, under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, to make weather data more accessible and actionable for the general public, leveraging technology to ensure last-mile connectivity for crucial information.
How to Use the Route Forecast
Accessing these vital updates is straightforward. While the IMD offers several platforms, including the MAUSAM app and the UMANG portal, the most direct way for route forecasts is often through a dedicated section on the main IMD website. Travellers can typically select their route, such as a major highway corridor like the Golden Quadrilateral, and view a map-based forecast. The system displays weather conditions for different segments of the journey. Some tools even allow for point-to-point forecasts where you input your start and end locations to get a tailored report based on your estimated travel time. This allows for dynamic planning, helping you decide on the best time to start your journey or whether to take an alternative route.
Decoding the Colour-Coded Warnings
A key feature of the IMD's advisories is the use of colour-coded warnings, which are crucial for quickly assessing risk. These are universal across IMD platforms. A 'Green' alert means all is well and no advisory is needed. A 'Yellow' alert advises you to 'Be Aware', as bad weather is possible and could cause disruptions. An 'Orange' alert means 'Be Prepared' for extremely bad weather that could disrupt transport and power. The most serious is a 'Red' alert, which means 'Take Action', as severe conditions are expected that pose a significant risk to life and will almost certainly disrupt travel. In mountainous areas, the system provides crucial impact-based forecasts for events like landslides, which are a major concern during the monsoon season.
