The Surprise: Unexpected Spending Requirements
Once a widely available complimentary perk, free lounge access is no longer a given. Banks in India have significantly tightened rules, now linking lounge access to your spending habits. Many major card issuers, including HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Axis
Bank, now require you to meet a minimum spending threshold in the previous quarter to unlock complimentary lounge visits in the current one. For example, some cards require a spend of ₹35,000 or more in a quarter to qualify. The logic is simple: as lounge usage surged, so did the costs for banks, who subsidised each visit. Now, they want to reward active, high-spending customers. Before you head to the airport, log in to your banking app or website to check the specific spending requirements for your card and ensure you've met them for the current period.
The Surprise: Your 'Free' Guest Is Not Free
Traveling with a companion? Don't assume they can enter the lounge with you for free. Guest policies are one of the most common and expensive areas for surprises. While some ultra-premium cards may include a complimentary guest, most card benefits are for the primary cardholder only. Bringing a guest will often mean you are charged a walk-in fee, which can range from ₹1,500 to over ₹3,500 per person. International lounge networks like Priority Pass also typically charge for guests, often around $32-$35 USD per person, which is billed directly to your card. Always check your card's specific guest policy before you arrive. If you travel with family frequently, it may be worth getting a card that explicitly offers complimentary guest access or provides add-on cards with their own lounge privileges.
The Surprise: You’ve Run Out of Visits
Many credit cards don't offer unlimited lounge access. Instead, they provide a limited number of complimentary visits per quarter or per year. It's easy to lose track, especially if you travel frequently. For instance, a card might offer two free visits per quarter. If you try to use it a third time, you will be charged the full entry fee. Some cards differentiate between domestic and international visits, with separate caps for each. To avoid this, keep a running tally of your lounge visits or check your balance through your bank's app. Programmes like Priority Pass and DreamFolks also have apps where you can track your visit history and remaining complimentary entries.
The Surprise: Your Card’s Benefits Changed
The world of credit card perks is constantly changing. Banks and card networks frequently revise their offerings, and lounge access is often the first benefit to be altered or removed. For example, from April 2026, complimentary lounge access on RuPay Platinum debit cards was discontinued entirely. Other cards, like the Airtel Axis Bank Credit Card, also removed domestic lounge visits as a feature. These changes are often communicated via email or statement notifications that can be easy to miss. It is no longer enough to just have the card; you must stay informed about its current benefits. A quick check of your card’s webpage or a call to customer service before a trip can save you from an awkward situation at the lounge entrance.
The Surprise: Wrong Card, Wrong Terminal, or Wrong Network
Sometimes, the problem isn't the benefit itself but a simple mismatch. Many travellers are turned away for reasons that have nothing to do with fees or limits. A common issue is being at the wrong terminal; some cards only grant access to domestic lounges, while you might be at the international terminal, or vice versa. Another problem is network incompatibility. Your Visa card won't get you into a lounge that's exclusively part of the Mastercard network. International access is often handled by separate programmes like Priority Pass or DragonPass, which you may need to enrol in beforehand. Finally, some lounges can deny entry if they are at full capacity, prioritising business class passengers over credit card entries. Always check the lounge directory for your card network to confirm the lounge you plan to visit is included and in the correct terminal for your flight.
