From Manual Inspections to Smart Surveys
For decades, maintaining India's vast road network has been a largely reactive process. Engineers would rely on visual inspections and public complaints to identify problems like cracks, potholes, and surface wear. This manual approach was often slow,
subjective, and inefficient, meaning by the time a pothole was reported and scheduled for repair, it had already caused countless bumpy rides and potential vehicle damage. This system made proactive maintenance nearly impossible, locking authorities into a constant cycle of expensive, emergency patch-up jobs, especially after a heavy monsoon season.
How AI Is Taking the Wheel
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is now spearheading a major shift towards a predictive maintenance model. The new system uses a combination of high-tech tools, including Network Survey Vehicles (NSVs) and AI-powered dashcams. These vehicles are equipped with high-resolution cameras, laser profilers, and sensors that scan the road surface in minute detail while travelling. The collected data, from surface cracks and faded lane markings to the functionality of streetlights, is fed into sophisticated AI and machine learning models. These models are trained to automatically detect and classify over 30 different types of road defects and safety issues, creating a comprehensive digital health record of the highway.
Turning Data into Smarter Decisions
This technology does more than just spot existing potholes. By analysing patterns in the data, the AI can predict which sections of a road are weakening and likely to fail in the future. This allows authorities to move from a reactive to a proactive approach, intervening with preventative maintenance before a small crack turns into a hazardous crater. All this information is consolidated into a centralized digital platform, often called a 'Data Lake', which gives officials a real-time, map-based dashboard of the entire road network's condition. They can track the deterioration of a road over time, prioritise repairs based on severity, and ensure that maintenance work is completed effectively.
The Benefits for Every Driver
The impact of this data-led approach extends far beyond smoother commutes. By identifying and fixing issues early, this technology significantly enhances road safety, a critical concern given that potholes were linked to thousands of fatalities in recent years. Proactive maintenance is also more cost-effective, helping optimize the use of public funds and potentially reducing maintenance budgets by identifying problems when they are cheaper to fix. For citizens, it means safer journeys, lower vehicle wear and tear, and a more reliable and efficient highway network. Some cities have reported up to 90% cost savings in their inspection processes alone.
The Road Ahead
The rollout is ambitious, with NHAI planning to deploy these systems across 40,000 kilometres of national highways. Both government bodies and private startups like RoadMetrics and Rasta.AI are contributing to this technological push, adapting solutions for both national highways and municipal roads. Challenges remain, including the initial cost of deployment, scaling the technology across India's entire, diverse road network, and training personnel to use these new digital tools effectively. However, the commitment to building a centralized, data-driven ecosystem marks a pivotal moment for Indian infrastructure.
