Planning Your Coastal Drive
The drive along National Highway 66 (NH 66) is the backbone of this coastal adventure. This highway connects Mangalore in the south to Karwar in the north, passing through a series of picturesque towns and villages. The best time to embark on this journey
is between October and February when the weather is pleasant and the sea is calm. The road conditions are generally good, with significant stretches widened to four or six lanes, making for a smooth drive. A trip of 4 to 5 days allows for a relaxed pace, giving you enough time to soak in the sights without rushing. While you can use any comfortable car, a vehicle with good ground clearance can be useful for exploring some of the more remote beaches.
Stop 1: Mangalore - The Gateway
Your journey begins in the bustling port city of Mangalore. Before hitting the open road, explore the ornate Kudroli Gokarnanatheshwara Temple and the historic Kadri Manjunatha Temple. For a taste of what's to come, head to Panambur or Tannirbhavi Beach to watch the sunset. Mangalore is a food lover's paradise, so don't leave without trying the iconic Mangalorean fish curry, fiery chicken ghee roast, and the delicate neer dosa. These dishes offer a perfect introduction to the region's celebrated cuisine, which relies heavily on coconut, fresh seafood, and distinct local spices.
Stop 2: Udupi - Temples and Islands
A short and scenic drive of about 60 km north on NH 66 brings you to Udupi, a town renowned for its spiritual significance and beautiful beaches. The main attraction is the 13th-century Sri Krishna Temple, a major pilgrimage site. After seeking blessings, head to Malpe Beach for its lively atmosphere and sea walk. From there, a ferry can take you to St. Mary's Island, a geological marvel known for its unique hexagonal basalt rock formations. For a quieter experience, visit Kaup Beach and climb its old lighthouse for panoramic views of the coastline.
Stop 3: Murudeshwar - The Divine Coastline
Continuing north, the drive to Murudeshwar is breathtaking, with the Western Ghats providing a stunning backdrop. On the way, you'll pass Maravanthe Beach, one of India's most scenic stretches of road, with the sea on one side and the Souparnika River on the other. The highlight of Murudeshwar is the towering 123-foot Shiva statue, the second tallest in the world, which sits majestically by the sea. The temple complex offers incredible views, especially at sunset. For the adventurous, nearby Netrani Island offers excellent opportunities for scuba diving and snorkelling.
Stop 4: Gokarna - Beaches and Bliss
Once known primarily as a pilgrimage town, Gokarna has transformed into a haven for travellers seeking laid-back beach vibes. It is home to the ancient Mahabaleshwar Temple, earning it the name 'Dakshin Kashi'. The town's coastline is famous for its uniquely shaped beaches. Om Beach, naturally shaped like the spiritual symbol, is a must-visit. Nearby, Kudle Beach offers a tranquil stretch of golden sand perfect for a morning stroll or watching the sunset. A beach trek connecting the various coves is a popular activity for those looking to explore this coastal paradise on foot.
Stop 5: Karwar - The Final Frontier
As you approach the Goa border, you'll reach Karwar, a serene town at the mouth of the Kali River. Rabindranath Tagore Beach, named after the poet who found inspiration here, is a perfect spot to unwind. You can also visit the INS Chapal Warship Museum for a glimpse into naval history. The Devbagh Beach, accessible by boat, is a pristine private island resort that offers a tranquil escape.
