A Quantum Leap in Capacity
Indian Railways is rolling out a next-generation Passenger Reservation System (PRS) that marks a monumental shift in its capabilities. The new system is designed to handle over 1.5 lakh ticket bookings every single minute. To put that into perspective,
the previous system could process around 32,000 bookings per minute. This is nearly a five-fold increase, aimed directly at tackling the immense digital demand from millions of passengers. The project, developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), is replacing infrastructure that has been in place for decades to create a more resilient and powerful booking engine.
The Technology Behind the Boost
This isn't just a minor update; it's a complete technological overhaul. The old system is being replaced with a modern, cloud-based platform. This cloud-native architecture allows for much greater scalability and flexibility, meaning it can handle sudden, massive spikes in traffic without buckling. Beyond just booking, the capacity for enquiries—like checking PNR status or seat availability—is also seeing a tenfold jump, from 4 lakh to over 40 lakh enquiries per minute. The new system is also designed with a multilingual, user-friendly interface to make the process smoother for everyone.
An End to the Tatkal Booking Nightmare?
The daily scramble for Tatkal tickets is arguably the biggest stress test for the railway booking system. The massive, simultaneous traffic has been notorious for crashing the platform, leaving users frustrated. With the new PRS capable of handling nearly five times the transaction volume, the expectation is that these peak-load situations will be managed far more efficiently. The phased rollout of the new system has already begun, with a new IRCTC beta website launched in July 2026. Early data from this beta phase has shown modest improvements, with more Tatkal bookings being successfully completed within the first few crucial minutes.

The sheer scale of Indian Railways' operations makes this a vital piece of national infrastructure. Between June 2025 and June 2026, over 65 crore reserved tickets were booked. Of those, a staggering 89% were purchased online, highlighting the shift away from physical counters to digital platforms. This enormous online dependency meant the old system was straining under the pressure. The upgrade is not just about convenience; it's about ensuring the backbone of India's travel network can keep pace with its digital-first population.
