Built for Unprecedented Speed
The most significant upgrade is a massive boost in the system's backend capacity. The old platform could handle around 32,000 bookings per minute, which often led to crashes during peak hours, especially for Tatkal tickets. The new system has been engineered
to process over 1.5 lakh bookings per minute, a nearly five-fold increase. Furthermore, its capacity to handle user queries has surged from 4 lakh to over 40 lakh per minute. For passengers, this translates to a much lower chance of encountering the dreaded 'service unavailable' message, promising a more stable and reliable booking experience even during high-demand periods like festivals and holidays.
A Simplified, Distraction-Free Process
One of the most welcome changes is the decluttering of the booking interface. The refreshed design does away with many of the common annoyances that slowed users down. Unnecessary pop-up advertisements and flashing graphics have been removed to create a cleaner layout. Perhaps most importantly, the platform has eliminated the need for repeated CAPTCHA verification during the booking process, a frequent point of frustration for many. By reducing these interruptions, the booking flow is now smoother and faster, allowing users to move from search to payment with fewer hurdles.
Smarter Search and Planning Tools
The new IRCTC platform introduces several intelligent features aimed at saving passengers time. A key update is the unified seat availability display. Previously, users had to check availability for each class—like Sleeper, 3AC, or 2AC—one by one. Now, all available classes and their seat counts are displayed on a single screen, allowing for quick comparison. Another major addition is the fare calendar. This tool lets travellers with flexible dates compare ticket prices across a range of days, making it easier to find more economical travel options, a feature common on airline booking websites but new to IRCTC.
Greater Control and Personalisation
The update gives passengers more control over their reservations. For the first time, users can select their preferred seat or berth during the booking process, rather than having one assigned automatically. This has been a long-requested feature that enhances the user experience. Additionally, the platform allows frequent travellers to save passenger details, which significantly speeds up future bookings for themselves or their families. These personalised touches are designed to make the platform more intuitive and aligned with the expectations of modern digital services.
Designed for Wider Accessibility
Recognising India's diverse population, the revamped website now offers support for multiple Indian languages, making it more accessible to users who are not proficient in English or Hindi. The platform also streamlines the process for concession bookings. Services for Divyangjan (persons with disabilities), students, and patients have been integrated into a single, unified system, simplifying what was previously a more fragmented process. This focus on inclusivity ensures that a wider range of passengers can navigate the booking system with ease.
