Why the Major Disruption?
The Northern Railway has announced a significant power and traffic block at the Chandigarh Railway Station, scheduled from September 10 to October 15, 2026. This prolonged disruption is necessary to facilitate a major upgrade of the station's infrastructure,
which is being managed by the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA). The core activities include erecting a new 'through-roof' structure and dismantling the old foot-over-bridge girders. While this will cause short-term inconvenience, the project is aimed at modernizing the station for improved safety, capacity, and passenger experience in the long run. Key Dates: A Phased Approach

Phase 1: September 10 to September 21. This phase will impact lines 6, 7, and 8.
Phase 2: September 22 to October 3. Work will shift to lines 4 and 5.

Cancellations and Short-Terminations Explained
The headline figure of '54 trains' primarily refers to the number of train trips that will be 'short-terminated' or 'short-originated'—meaning they will not travel the full length of their route to or from Chandigarh. Instead, many will start or end their journeys at Ambala Cantonment station. Passengers on these services will need to arrange their own transport between Ambala and Chandigarh. In addition to this, a total of 12 train services have been fully cancelled for the entire duration of the block. This translates to 442 individual trips being cancelled between September 9 and October 16. Among the key services completely cancelled are the Chandigarh-Amritsar Express (14541/14542) and the Chandigarh-Firozepur Express (14629/14630).
Which Trains Are Affected?
A significant number of services will now bypass Chandigarh, starting or ending at nearby stations. During the block period, six trains will operate from Ambala Cantonment, and another eight will operate from Mohali (SAS Nagar) instead of Chandigarh. For instance, the Ajmer-Chandigarh Garib Rath (12983/12984) and the Udaipur-Chandigarh Express (20989/20990) are among the key trains that will be short-terminated at Ambala on specific dates. Furthermore, to ease passenger flow, eight long-distance trains, including the Amritsar-Dehradun service (14631/14632), will be given an additional temporary stop at Mohali. Some trains will also be diverted entirely, such as two services on the Ludhiana-Amritsar route that will bypass Chandigarh and Mohali by running via Sirhind on certain dates.
