consecutive days, an anti-cyclonic circulation establishes in the lower atmosphere, and there's a significant drop in moisture. This retreat is a staggered affair, typically commencing from the northwestern state of Rajasthan in early to mid-September. From there, the line of withdrawal moves progressively southeastward across the country over several weeks. This means that in late September, Delhi might be experiencing dry, post-monsoon weather while Kerala is still receiving heavy monsoon showers.

Satellite imagery is crucial for tracking the monsoon's departure. Fresh satellite images from early September 2026 show a striking reduction in cloud cover over large parts of northwest and central India.
