Visas and Accessibility
For Indian travellers, Nepal is the most accessible destination, requiring no visa for entry. You can enter with a valid passport or a Voter ID card issued by the Election Commission of India. Numerous direct flights connect major Indian cities to Kathmandu.
Vietnam requires an e-visa, which can be applied for online, offering stays of up to 90 days. Air connectivity has significantly improved, with over 100 direct flights per week linking Indian and Vietnamese cities. Sri Lanka also requires an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for Indian passport holders, which is a straightforward online process. The island nation is well-connected with direct flights from several Indian cities.
The September Weather Report
September marks a transitional weather period for all three countries. In Nepal, the monsoon is retreating, especially in the second half of the month. This brings clearer skies, lush green landscapes, and pleasant temperatures, with Kathmandu averaging between 20°C and 28°C. Vietnam's weather varies by region. The North (Hanoi) sees the end of its rainy season with cooler, more comfortable days. The Centre (Da Nang, Hoi An) can experience increased rain and the possibility of storms, while the South (Ho Chi Minh City) continues to have its rainy season, typically with afternoon showers. Sri Lanka's weather is a mixed bag, as it's the tail end of the southwest monsoon. The western and southern coasts can still expect rain, while the north and east remain drier and hotter. Temperatures in coastal areas like Colombo hover around 25°C to 30°C.
Budgeting Your Getaway
All three destinations are known for being budget-friendly for Indian travellers. Nepal is often considered the most economical, with daily expenses for a budget-conscious traveller estimated between ₹2,000 and ₹3,500, excluding flights. Accommodation and local food are particularly affordable. Vietnam also offers excellent value, with a similar daily budget range of ₹2,500 to ₹4,000. Street food is a highlight and extremely easy on the wallet. Sri Lanka is slightly more expensive but still very reasonable, with daily costs ranging from ₹2,000 to ₹4,000. A week-long trip to any of these countries can be comfortably managed on a modest budget with careful planning.
For the Adventure and Nature Lover
If adventure is your priority, Nepal is an unparalleled choice. September marks the beginning of the trekking season, offering breathtaking views of the Himalayas as the skies clear. Trails in the Everest and Annapurna regions become more accessible. For water and nature enthusiasts, Sri Lanka offers beautiful beaches for surfing and whale watching, especially on the east coast, which sees better weather this month. National parks like Yala offer budget-friendly safaris to spot leopards and elephants. Vietnam presents diverse options, from cruising through the stunning limestone karsts of Ha Long Bay to exploring the massive cave systems in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park.
For Culture, History, and Food
Each country boasts a rich cultural tapestry. In Nepal, you can explore the ancient temples and Durbar Squares of the Kathmandu Valley. Vietnam offers a journey through history, from the bustling Old Quarter of Hanoi to the lantern-lit ancient town of Hoi An and the imperial city of Hue. Its cuisine, famous for dishes like pho and banh mi, is a major draw. Sri Lanka is home to several UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa and the iconic Sigiriya rock fortress. The island's culinary scene is a flavourful blend of spices, with dishes like kottu roti and a wide array of curries.
