The October Skin Shift
October in India is a month of 'in-between' weather. The heavy humidity of the monsoon subsides, but the intense cold of winter hasn't fully arrived. This can leave skin feeling confused; oily T-zones might persist, while cheeks begin to feel tight and
dry. For some, especially in northern regions, the drop in humidity can strip moisture, leading to flaky patches that make foundation application a challenge. In coastal areas, humidity can still be a factor, requiring a balanced approach. The key is to move away from the strictly mattifying products of summer and monsoon and embrace formulas that offer hydration and a healthy glow.
Start with Hydrating Skin Prep
A flawless seasonal transition starts before your foundation. Your skin needs more moisture now, so prepping it correctly is non-negotiable. Swap your lightweight gel moisturisers for something more nourishing. Look for creams with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or ceramides that help lock in moisture and create a smooth canvas. A hydrating primer is also a worthy investment. It will not only help your makeup last longer but also prevent it from clinging to dry patches that can become more prominent during this season. Allow each skincare product a minute to absorb fully before moving to the next step to prevent pilling.
Rethink Your Foundation
That ultra-matte, full-coverage foundation that was your saviour during the monsoons might now be your enemy. As the air becomes drier, such formulas can settle into fine lines and emphasise texture. This is the perfect time to switch to a more luminous or satin-finish foundation. Look for liquid or cream-based foundations that offer a 'dewy' or 'radiant' finish. These formulations often contain hydrating ingredients that keep the skin looking supple throughout the day. If you prefer less coverage, a tinted moisturiser or a BB cream is an excellent choice, providing a hint of colour while boosting hydration. When applying, use a damp beauty sponge to press the product into the skin for a seamless, second-skin effect.
Embrace Cream-Based Colour
Powder products can contribute to a dry, cakey look as the weather cools down. Now is the time to embrace cream-based blushes, bronzers, and highlighters. Cream blush, in particular, can be a game-changer, melting into the skin to provide a natural, lit-from-within flush of colour that powder formulas often struggle to replicate. They are more forgiving on skin that's becoming drier and add a youthful dewiness to the complexion. Apply with your fingertips or a stippling brush, blending onto the apples of your cheeks for a healthy glow. The same principle applies to eyeshadows; cream formulas are less likely to look crepey on eyelids.
Hydrate and Condition Your Lips
Chapped lips are one of the first signs of the seasonal shift. The drying air can be harsh on the delicate skin of your lips, making matte liquid lipsticks feel uncomfortable and look cracked. Transition your lip wardrobe by reintroducing creamy bullet lipsticks, satin finishes, and tinted lip balms. These formulas provide colour while nourishing your lips with ingredients like shea butter or vitamin E. For extra care, gently exfoliate your lips once or twice a week and always have a hydrating lip balm on hand for touch-ups.
Set for Success, Not for Dryness
While setting your makeup is still important for longevity, the method needs to change. Instead of applying a heavy layer of setting powder all over your face, be more strategic. Use a finely milled, translucent powder and apply it only to areas that tend to get oily, like the T-zone. For the rest of the face, a hydrating setting spray is a far better option. A good setting spray will not only lock your makeup in place but also meld all the layers together, take away any powdery finish, and add a final boost of hydration for a fresh, radiant look that lasts.
