Understanding the Annual Scramble
Every year, during major festivals like Dussehra, Diwali, and Chhath Puja, the demand for train tickets skyrockets. Major metropolitan areas such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Pune see a mass exodus as people travel to their hometowns in states like Uttar
Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and beyond. With trains being the most affordable and practical mode of transport for long distances, seats on popular routes get booked out within minutes of the reservation window opening, which is typically 120 days in advance. This leaves millions on ever-growing waitlists, anxiously hoping for a confirmation that may never come. The sheer volume of travellers creates a logistical puzzle that Indian Railways tackles year after year.
Your Lifeline: Festival Special Trains
To manage this immense pressure, Indian Railways announces hundreds of 'Festival Special' trains. These are additional services deployed on high-demand routes for a limited period during the festive months, primarily October and November. For 2026, multiple railway zones have already announced services to clear the rush for Diwali and Chhath Puja. Central Railway, for instance, has announced 418 special services connecting Mumbai and Pune with destinations like Gorakhpur, Nagpur, and Chennai. Similarly, Northern Railway is running special trains connecting Delhi, Chandigarh, and Ayodhya with cities in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, such as Varanasi and Patna. These trains are identifiable by their five-digit numbers, which usually start with '0'. They offer a crucial second chance for those who missed out on booking regular train tickets.
Tips for Securing a Confirmed Ticket
Booking a ticket during the festival rush requires a game plan. First, act fast. Bookings for some special trains for the October-November 2026 period have already begun. Use the IRCTC Rail Connect app or the official website, and have your passenger details saved in the 'Master List' feature to speed up the checkout process. If you miss the initial booking window, the Tatkal scheme is your next best bet, opening one day before the journey at 10 AM for AC classes and 11 AM for sleeper class. Be flexible with your travel dates; travelling a day or two before the peak rush can significantly increase your chances. Also, explore different boarding and destination stations. A ticket might not be available from your exact start to end point, but you may find a confirmed berth by booking for a slightly shorter or longer leg of the journey and then booking a separate connecting ticket.
When Trains Are Full: Exploring Alternatives
If a confirmed train ticket remains elusive, it's time to look at other options. Inter-state government and private buses are a common alternative, though they can be crowded and subject to delays. Booking a seat on a private VIP or sleeper bus well in advance can offer a more comfortable journey. Domestic flights are another viable option, especially for longer distances. While airfares surge dramatically closer to festival dates, booking several weeks or even months ahead can sometimes land you a reasonable deal, especially on budget carriers like IndiGo or SpiceJet. Finally, carpooling services and private taxi rentals have become increasingly popular, offering more flexibility and door-to-door convenience, albeit at a higher cost. These options can be a lifesaver when all train routes show a 'REGRET' status.
