Across India, a significant restructuring of technical education is underway. In the 2025-26 academic year alone, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) approved the 'progressive closure' of 58 engineering and technical colleges. This means
these institutions can no longer admit new students, though existing batches can complete their degrees. This is not an isolated event. Over the last three years, a total of 342 technical institutions have shut down, with the highest numbers in states like Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh. Alongside this, over 950 individual courses have also been discontinued. The primary reasons cited by the regulatory body are persistent issues like low student admissions, a lack of qualified faculty, and failure to meet infrastructure standards. For years, many private engineering colleges struggled to fill their seats, making their operations financially unviable and often compromising the quality of education delivered.
A Shift From Quantity to Quality
This wave of closures is not about limiting education, but about raising its standard. For decades, India saw a massive expansion in technical education, leading to a surplus of institutions. However, the quality was often inconsistent. Many graduates were found to be unemployable, lacking the specific technical skills and soft skills demanded by the industry. The current consolidation is a regulatory correction to this indiscriminate growth. The AICTE's strategy reflects a deliberate pivot from quantity to quality. By phasing out underperforming colleges, the regulator aims to create a healthier ecosystem where institutions are more accountable and focused on delivering education that leads to better student outcomes and stronger placement records. This move is intended to enhance the credibility of Indian technical education on a global stage.
But What About High-Demand Courses?
The core concern for many is whether this consolidation will limit access to sought-after specialisations like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Data Science, and Machine Learning. The evidence suggests the opposite may be true. While seats in some traditional engineering branches are decreasing due to low demand, the AICTE is actively promoting and approving new-age courses. The regulator itself has declared 2025 as the 'Year of AI' and has been approving B.Tech courses in AI & Data Science since 2021. In a notable move, even institutions like the Central Sanskrit University are now offering AICTE-approved B.Tech programmes in AI, blending traditional knowledge with modern tech. This indicates a clear shift in focus. The problem isn't a lack of availability of high-demand courses, but a concentration of these quality programs in better-performing institutions, while underperforming colleges with outdated curricula are being phased out.
Navigating the New Landscape
For students aspiring to be engineers, this changing environment requires a more strategic approach. The closures underscore the importance of choosing an institution based on its quality, faculty, and placement record, rather than just its existence. Despite the closures, overall enrolment in AICTE-approved institutions has actually been rising steadily, from 22.11 lakh in 2023-24 to 29.58 lakh in 2025-26, suggesting that demand for quality technical education remains strong. The future of engineering is geared towards specialisation. Companies are increasingly looking for graduates with demonstrable skills in high-growth areas like AI, cloud computing, and data analytics, rather than hiring in bulk for generalist roles. Therefore, students should focus on institutions that not only offer these modern courses but also provide robust training, project-based learning, and industry exposure to ensure they are job-ready.
