First, the great news. As of 2026, Sri Lanka has made visiting incredibly simple for Indian travellers. You do not need a traditional, pre-approved visa sticker in your passport. Instead, Indian citizens are eligible for a free 30-day tourist Electronic
Travel Authorization (ETA). While the ETA is free of charge, it is mandatory to apply for it online before you fly. The process is straightforward on the official government portal (eta.gov.lk). Approval usually arrives within 48 hours. Upon landing, you will need your passport (with six months' validity), a printout of your ETA approval, a return flight ticket, and proof of your accommodation.
Day 1: Arrival in Colombo & Drive to Kandy
Fly into Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB). Instead of staying in Colombo, hire a pre-booked car or take a train directly to Kandy, the cultural heart of Sri Lanka. The journey itself, whether by road or rail, is your first taste of the island's lush landscapes. After checking into your hotel, spend the evening taking a leisurely stroll around the serene Kandy Lake. Day 4: The World's Most Scenic Train Ride to Ella

Book your tickets in advance, especially if you want a seat in an observation car. Upon arriving in the backpacker-friendly town of Ella, check into your guesthouse and relax.
Day 5: Hiking and Views in Ella
Ella is an adventurer's paradise. Start your morning with a rewarding hike up Little Adam's Peak for panoramic views of the Ella Gap. Later, take a walk along the tracks to the iconic Nine Arch Bridge, a marvel of colonial engineering nestled in the jungle. You can time your visit to watch a train cross the bridge. Day 6: Coastal Charms of Galle
