The long, winding train journey from Bengaluru to Goa may soon be a thing of the past. Indian Railways has sanctioned a new Vande Bharat Express that promises to cut travel time to around 13 hours, making weekend trips significantly more feasible.
A New Vande Bharat Service
The
Railway Board has officially approved a new Vande Bharat Express connecting Yesvantpur in Bengaluru with Madgaon in Goa. According to the sanctioned plan released in late October 2026, this new service will operate six days a week, offering a much-needed direct daytime travel option between the two popular destinations. The journey from Yesvantpur to Madgaon is expected to take approximately 13 hours and 20 minutes, while the return trip will be slightly faster at 12 hours and 55 minutes. This new route will run via Mangaluru Junction, replacing the existing Madgaon-Mangaluru Central Vande Bharat Express. While an official launch date has not been announced, reports suggest the service could begin as early as the third week of November 2026.
The Scenic Route and Key Stops
Beyond speed, the journey itself is set to be a major attraction. The train will travel through the stunning landscapes of the Western Ghats, particularly the picturesque section between Sakleshpur and Subrahmanya Road, offering passengers views of lush hills, forests, and valleys. The service will include 12 intermediate stops, enhancing connectivity for several towns in Karnataka before reaching Goa. Key stations on the route include Hassan, Sakleshpur, Mangaluru Junction, Udupi, Murdeshwar, and Karwar. This not only links the tech hub of Bengaluru to the beaches of Goa but also provides a crucial connection for travellers heading to Karnataka's coastal and Malenadu regions.
Faster Than Current Options?
Currently, the fastest train between Bengaluru and Goa, the YPR VSG EXP, takes approximately 12 to 15 hours, depending on the service. While the new Vande Bharat's time of around 13 hours is similar, its introduction represents a significant upgrade in comfort, amenities, and having a reliable daytime schedule. The new Vande Bharat provides a premium alternative to existing overnight trains and lengthy bus journeys. The key distinction of the headline's 'direct line' claim is more about the introduction of a premium, direct Vande Bharat service rather than a completely new track that shortens the distance.
The Other 'Direct Line': Hubballi-Ankola
It is important not to confuse this new Vande Bharat service with the long-proposed Hubballi-Ankola direct railway line. That project, which involves laying new tracks through the Western Ghats, has been discussed for decades and promises even more dramatic time savings by creating a shortcut. However, it has faced significant hurdles and delays due to major environmental concerns. The project requires clearing a substantial area of pristine forest, leading to a prolonged debate between development and conservation. As of mid-2026, a revised proposal for the Hubballi-Ankola line has been submitted, but it remains a project for the future, pending approvals. The newly sanctioned Vande Bharat operates on existing, recently electrified tracks.
