Treat AI as a Partner, Not a Shortcut
The most significant risk of using AI for studying is the potential decline in critical thinking. When students rely too heavily on AI to generate ideas or complete assignments, they can skip important mental processes like analysis and reasoning. The goal
is to use AI as an amplifier for your efforts, not a replacement for them. Think of it this way: if you use AI to summarise a chapter so you don't have to read it, you're being passive. If you read the chapter first and then ask AI to summarise it to check your own understanding, you're being active. The first approach outsources your thinking, while the second uses the tool to reinforce it. The key is to engage with the material directly before turning to technology for assistance.
Become the Socratic Questioner
Instead of asking AI for direct answers, use it to engage in a dialogue. This approach, known as the Socratic method, uses probing questions to stimulate critical thinking and self-discovery. Frame your prompts to make the AI act like a tutor that asks questions and provides hints rather than just giving the solution. For example, instead of asking, "What are the causes of the French Revolution?" try, "Act as a history tutor. Ask me questions that will help me understand the key social, economic, and political causes of the French Revolution. Don't give me the answers directly." This transforms the AI from a simple answer machine into a thinking partner, forcing you to articulate your thoughts and identify gaps in your knowledge.
Transform and Create, Don't Just Copy
A core principle of active learning is constructing your own understanding. Use the output from AI tools as raw material, not as the final product. For instance, you could ask an AI to generate a list of key terms from a lecture. Then, your active learning task is to create a mind map connecting those terms, write your own definitions, or use them to build flashcards. You can also ask AI to generate practice questions or a quiz based on your notes, which instantly creates an active recall session. Another effective strategy is to have the AI generate a play or case study about a historical event or scientific concept, which you can then analyse or discuss. The act of transforming the AI's output into a new format deepens retention far more than simply reading it.
Appoint Yourself as the Final Editor
AI models are known to make mistakes, present biased information, or even invent facts, a phenomenon often called "hallucination". This is not just a flaw; it's an opportunity for active learning. Take on the role of a fact-checker and critical editor for any information the AI provides. When you ask an AI to explain a complex topic, your job is to verify its claims against your textbook and other reliable sources. This process forces you to engage deeply with the material and develop a more discerning eye for accuracy. By treating AI output with healthy scepticism, you remain in control of the learning process and sharpen your analytical skills.
Use AI for Feedback, Not for Writing
One of the most powerful and responsible ways to use AI is as a feedback tool. After you have written a draft of an essay or a solution to a problem, you can ask an AI for specific feedback. For example, you can prompt it to "Review my draft for clarity and conciseness, but do not rewrite any content for me. Provide suggestions on how I might improve my arguments." This keeps the core intellectual work—the writing and thinking—in your hands, while using the AI for a task that is often hard to get, which is immediate, specific feedback. It helps you refine your writing and reasoning skills without outsourcing them.
