The Route: An All-Weather Lifeline
The Vande Bharat Express now directly connects Jammu Tawi with Srinagar, completing the long-awaited Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project. This service, which began its full run in the first half of 2026, has replaced the gruelling 8-to-11-hour
road journey with a comfortable train ride lasting less than five hours. The primary route includes key stoppages at Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan Udhampur, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, Reasi, and Banihal before reaching Srinagar. Due to overwhelming demand that has seen the existing trains run at full capacity, Indian Railways approved a third Vande Bharat service for this route in August 2026, further cementing the importance of this connection and adding capacity for eager travellers.
A Journey of Engineering Marvels
This is no ordinary train journey; it is a scenic and engineering spectacle. Passengers are treated to breathtaking views as the train traverses the Pir Panjal mountain range. The undisputed highlight is crossing the Chenab Rail Bridge, which stands as the world's highest railway bridge, soaring 359 metres above the riverbed—taller than the Eiffel Tower. The route also features India's first cable-stayed railway bridge, the Anji Khad Bridge, and passes through 38 tunnels, one of which is the nation's longest transport tunnel. The journey itself is an attraction, offering panoramic vistas of the valley that were previously only accessible by road.
Built to Conquer the Cold
The Vande Bharat trains operating in Kashmir are specially engineered to handle the region's harsh winters and sub-zero temperatures. These rakes feature advanced heating systems to prevent water lines and bio-toilets from freezing, even in conditions as cold as -20°C. The driver's cabin is fitted with a heated windshield to prevent fogging and ensure clear visibility. Even the front of the train is equipped with a special cattle guard designed to cut through snow on the tracks. Alongside these climate-specific modifications, passengers enjoy the standard premium Vande Bharat amenities, including 180-degree rotating seats, large observation windows, onboard Wi-Fi, and catering services.
Fares, Timings and How to Book
The service is both fast and affordable. A ticket in the AC Chair Car (CC) costs approximately ₹715 to ₹880, while the more premium Executive Chair Car (EC) is priced between ₹1,320 and ₹1,515. There are currently two trains running each way daily, offering four services in total. These include a morning departure from Jammu Tawi at 6:20 AM to reach Srinagar by 11:10 AM, and an afternoon service. Return journeys from Srinagar have similar morning and afternoon slots. The newly approved third train is expected to add more timing options to meet the high demand. Tickets can be booked up to 60 days in advance through the official IRCTC website or the mobile app.
Faster, Safer and More Reliable
The expansion of Vande Bharat services is a game-changer for the region. It provides a dependable, all-weather transportation link, a crucial alternative to the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway which is often closed due to landslides and snowfall. This reliability boosts tourism, trade, and the local economy. A recent milestone in August 2026 saw the operational speed on the critical Katra-Banihal section increased to 100 kmph, with a Vande Bharat train successfully crossing the Chenab Bridge at that speed for the first time. This development promises to further shorten travel time and enhance the efficiency of this vital connection, making travel for tourists, locals, and security forces faster and safer than ever before.
