The New Festive Shopping List
This year, the festive shopping season, which traditionally peaks around Diwali, is witnessing a significant evolution. While apparel, home décor, and sweets remain popular, they are increasingly sharing wallet space with a host of non-traditional categories.
Young Indians, particularly Millennials and Gen Z, are driving a surge in demand for electronics, premium gadgets, beauty and personal care products, and even travel. Reports indicate that categories like beauty and personal care could see growth of 35-40% this festive period. This diversification shows that the very definition of a 'festive purchase' is expanding, moving from items for the home and family to products and services for personal use and enjoyment. Even gifting is changing, with a move away from traditional mithai towards curated hampers, gourmet foods, and wellness products that reflect personal taste.
From Memories to Materialism
A fundamental driver of this shift is the growing preference for experiences over physical products. According to one report, a staggering 78% of Indian consumers now prefer spending on experiences. For Gen Z, this means budgeting for everything from rock concerts and travel to pottery workshops and unique food festivals. This demographic is increasingly channelling its discretionary spending into creating memories rather than just acquiring possessions. The festive season is now seen as an opportune time to invest in these experiences—be it a trip with friends or tickets to a major live event. This move towards an 'experience economy' suggests a deeper cultural shift where personal fulfilment and shareable moments are becoming the new status symbols for a generation that grew up online.
The Economic and Digital Enablers
Several factors are fuelling this new wave of consumption. Rising disposable incomes and greater financial confidence play a significant role. But equally important is the digital ecosystem that young Indians inhabit. The proliferation of direct-to-consumer (D2C) brands and the rise of quick commerce have made a wider variety of products accessible than ever before. Quick commerce platforms, in particular, are reshaping last-minute festive buying, with sales expected to surge by over 100%. Social media acts as a powerful engine for discovery and aspiration. Research shows that about 34% of Gen Z consumers turn to social platforms for festive shopping ideas and inspiration. Influencers and targeted digital ads introduce them to new brands and trends, from skincare routines to the latest smartphones, creating a continuous cycle of desire and demand.
Redefining Tradition
This trend doesn't necessarily signal an abandonment of tradition but rather its reinvention. Young consumers are finding new ways to make festive celebrations their own. A festive purchase might now be a smart speaker to play devotional music, a new camera to capture family moments, or a subscription to a wellness app as a form of self-care. Even traditional categories are getting a modern makeover; for instance, chocolatiers are infusing products with familiar festive flavours like coconut and rose to appeal to a younger palate. Brands are responding by moving away from one-size-fits-all offerings and focusing on personalisation, premiumisation, and storytelling. Gifting has become less about the monetary value and more about the experience and thoughtfulness behind the gesture.
