The End of the Instagram Face
For years, the prevailing beauty standard online was one of flawless perfection. Dominated by the ‘Instagram Face,’ makeup routines often involved multiple layers of high-coverage products designed to conceal, contour, and create a perfectly uniform canvas.
This look, characterized by its sharp angles and matte finish, required a heavy-handed approach to foundation. But for Gen Z, a generation that grew up with filters and digitally altered images, there's a growing desire to push back against these unrealistic standards. They are tired of hiding their skin and are instead championing authenticity, imperfections and all. This has led to a collective rejection of anything that feels like a mask, including heavy, cakey foundation.
Authenticity Over Perfection
More than any generation before them, Gen Z values authenticity. This core value extends directly to their beauty philosophy. Instead of striving for an unattainable ideal of poreless, flawless skin, they are celebrating real skin texture, freckles, and even the occasional blemish. The goal is no longer to cover up but to enhance. This shift is evident in the rise of social media movements like #NoFilter and the #RealSkinMovement, where users proudly showcase their unedited faces. Makeup is seen less as a tool for correction and more as a form of self-expression. As a result, heavy foundations that erase all signs of natural skin are falling out of favor. The new ideal is to look like the best version of yourself, not someone else entirely.
Enter 'Skinimalism': Skincare First, Makeup Second
Coinéd to describe a minimalist approach to beauty, 'skinimalism' is the driving force behind Gen Z’s new routine. This philosophy prioritizes skin health above all else, focusing on creating a healthy, radiant base through consistent skincare rather than covering it with makeup. The focus is on using fewer, but more effective, multi-functional products that nourish the skin. Instead of reaching for a thick foundation, Gen Z prefers lightweight alternatives that let their skin breathe. Products like skin tints, tinted moisturizers, hydrating serums, and SPF have become the new staples. These formulations offer sheer, breathable coverage that evens out the complexion while still allowing natural skin to show through, perfectly aligning with the skinimalist ethos.
The TikTok Effect and Smart Consumerism
The bite-sized, video-first format of platforms like TikTok has accelerated this trend. Makeup tutorials for achieving a “no-makeup makeup” look using minimal products have gone viral. Trends like “glass skin” or “cloud skin” emphasize a dewy, luminous finish that simply can’t be achieved with heavy, matte foundations. The unfiltered nature of video often makes cakey makeup more obvious, further pushing users toward more natural-looking alternatives. Beyond aesthetics, Gen Z are savvy and informed consumers. They grew up with access to endless information and are fluent in reading ingredient lists and debunking marketing jargon. They prefer to invest in hybrid products that offer both skincare benefits and light coverage, seeing it as a smarter, more efficient use of their money. This generation is also highly conscious of sustainability and ethical practices, often favoring clean, vegan, and cruelty-free brands that align with their values.
