When two of Bollywood’s most illustrious families come together, what’s on the dinner table? Kareena Kapoor Khan, the ultimate insider, reveals the delicious culinary clash between the hearty, boisterous Kapoors and the refined, health-conscious Pataudis.
The Kapoor Table: Loud, Lavish, and Legendary
The Kapoor 'khandaan' is synonymous with a larger-than-life approach to cinema, and their passion for food is just as epic. In various interviews, Kareena Kapoor Khan has painted a vivid picture of the Kapoor dining experience. It's loud, joyful, and unapologetically indulgent. She has often compared their family gatherings to big Italian families, where everyone is talking animatedly, and the conversation is as robust as the food. For the Kapoors, food and acting are two of the greatest passions, making it difficult to choose which one reigns supreme. The cuisine is classic, hearty Punjabi fare. Kareena revealed that the one dish that truly unites the entire family is 'paya', a rich, slow-cooked goat trotter curry. It’s a dish that embodies the soul of their culinary tradition: flavourful, communal, and deeply satisfying. This love for rich food was a staple of her upbringing, with memories of home-cooked meat, dal, and parathas at grand Diwali parties supervised by her grandmother.
The Pataudi Plate: Healthy, Refined, and Royal
In stark contrast to the Kapoor way of life is the dining culture at the Pataudi household. Here, the influence is Nawabi, but the preference leans towards the healthy and understated. In a recent appearance on 'The Great Indian Kapil Show', Kareena humorously highlighted this difference. She shared that the entire Pataudi family, from her mother-in-law Sharmila Tagore to Saif Ali Khan and his sisters, has a surprising favourite: lauki, or bottle gourd. While Saif enjoys it, he seems less keen to announce it. Kareena quipped that while she and her family are 'paya khaane wale' (paya eaters), the Pataudis are often having lauki cooked. She described the two families as being on 'opposite ends', with the Kapoors being 'too unhealthy' and the Pataudis 'too healthy'. While Saif's Nawabi heritage includes a love for rich meat dishes, his personal preference, particularly for daily meals, skews towards simpler, vegetarian options like bhindi or gobi with dal. This illustrates a more disciplined and modern approach to the royal cuisine.
Kareena: The Bridge Between Two Worlds
So where does Kareena, a self-proclaimed foodie, fit in? She acts as the delicious bridge between these two culinary universes. While she respects the Pataudis' healthy habits, her own palate remains firmly rooted in her Punjabi and Sindhi heritage. She has mentioned that while Saif can eat the same simple food daily, she needs variety and that classic 'Punjabi swaad'. Her comfort foods are not just indulgences but staples; she needs her rajma chawal or kadhi chawal regularly. However, she also embraces a balanced approach, influenced by both her fitness goals and her husband's lifestyle. She has long been a proponent of simple, home-cooked meals and the benefits of ghee, a lesson from her grandmother. While Saif is often the one experimenting in the kitchen, Kareena is in charge of the ambience, putting on jazz music to create the perfect dining mood. Even their children seem to reflect this blend; while Taimur often follows his father's tastes, little Jeh is a fan of parathas with white butter, a true Kapoor delight.
