Vegetables, especially perishable ones like tomatoes, onions, and leafy greens, are the first to feel the monsoon's effects. Heavy, concentrated bursts of rain can flood fields, leading to crop damage and rot. This immediately shrinks the available supply.
For example, recent monsoon patterns have shown that intense rainfall can disrupt the supply of something as basic as coriander, causing its price to surge in urban markets far from where it's grown. Because these crops have a short shelf life and depend on daily harvesting, any disruption is felt at the local market within days, leading to sharp price hikes that directly impact your grocery bill.
The Broken Supply Chain
Even if crops survive the rain, they still need to get to the market. The monsoon often complicates this journey immensely. Waterlogged roads, damaged bridges, and landslides, particularly in hilly regions, can sever crucial transport links. This creates bottlenecks, delaying trucks loaded with produce from reaching wholesale markets, or 'mandis'. This disruption in the supply chain means less produce is available, and what does arrive often comes with higher transportation costs, which are passed on to the consumer. The monsoon's impact on grains like rice, pulses, and maize is more complex and plays out over a longer period. These are 'Kharif' crops, sown at the beginning of the rainy season. The timing and distribution of the monsoon are critical. A delayed or weak start to the monsoon can push back the sowing window, leading to lower acreage being planted as farmers become hesitant. For instance, insufficient rain in central India can lead to a significant drop in the area sown for pulses like tur (arhar). While India often maintains buffer stocks of staples like rice and wheat, a poor Kharif season due to an erratic monsoon can deplete these reserves and put upward pressure on grain prices months later.
